A Study of the Cellular Proliferation and Anti-oxidative Effects of Sophora Flavescens and Vitex Rotundifolia Extracts with Different Extraction Methods

This study attempted to provide data that would be useful in developing materials for anti-hair loss cosmetics after performing MTT assay and DPPH radical scavenging activity tests on the effective ingredients extracted from Sophora flavescens and Vitex rotundifolia which are known as good substances in preventing hair loss and facilitating hair growth using diverse extraction methods such as hot water extraction, distillation & extraction, organic solvent (ethanol) extraction, ultrasound-assisted (ethanol) extraction and ultrasound-assisted (water) extraction. The results indicate the following: In terms of cellular proliferation effects using MTT assay, ultrasonic (ethanol) extract was the highest, followed by distilled extract, ethanol extract, ultrasonic (water) extract and hot water extract. In particular, ultrasonic (ethanol) Sophora flavescens extract (294.8) revealed very high cellular proliferation effects. In fact, it was far greater than Vitex rotundifolia in terms of cellular proliferation effects. The cellular proliferation effects of Sophora flavescens extract were very high in ultrasonic (ethanol) extract (294.8%) and ethanol extract (201.9%). In terms of the cellular proliferation effects of Vitex rotundifolia, ultrasonic (ethanol) extract (145.3%) was the highest, followed by ethanol extract (90.9%).In addition, the DPPH radical scavenging activity-based anti-oxidative test found that anti-oxidative activity was the highest in ethanol extract (Vitex rotundifolia: 84.8%, Sophora flavescens: 82.7%). In terms of the anti-oxidative effects of Sophora flavescens extract, ethanol extract was the highest at 82.7%, followed by hot water extract (50.6%). In contrast, the anti-oxidative effects of Vitex rotundifolia extract were the highest in ethanol extract at 84.8%.
