Korea`s financial crisis in 1997, which called for IMF`s emergency rescue package, enforced the state-run Korea Power Electric Company (KEPCO) to face with unprecedented challenge: deep fall in domestic electricity demand; difficulty in mobilizing funds from international financial market; and sharp increase in import costs of fuels and investment goods. The author recommends the followings to deal with KEPCO`s above challenges i) reduction of subsidiary companies; ii) reengineering of KEPCO`s functional and organizational structure; iii) readiness to accept competition in electricity market; iv) expansion of KEPCO`s exposure in world energy market; v) restructuring of product pricing system; vi) optimum mix of fuels for power generators; and vii) decomposition of KEPCO`s organization into autonomous and mutually competing operational departments.
