Most of the greenhouse gas emission depends on fossil fuel burning. To reduce the emission, increasing the productivity of the energy use is expected to be the most cost effective way. Korea has been accused of being energy inefficient based on a comparison of energy intensities among the industralized countries. This study tries to evaluate the actual energy intensities in Korea and Japan through the closer examination of structure of energy consumption. The result of the Input -Output analysis shows that the energy intensity per value added in industrial sector of Korea bas been about 1.7 times as much as that of Japan. It means that there is a large potential and opportunity for decreasing the energy use by reallocation of industries and technical renovations.
