Cognitive Complexity as a Predictor of Leader Emergence and its Effect on Team Performance

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between cognitive complexity and emergent leadership, as well as to investigate how cognitive complexity of emergent leaders affects team performance. A total of 72 teams comprising a total of 239 undergraduate students participated in this study, which was employed using a computer-based business simulation game. Each team played the role of top management for a firm in a simulated market. After completing the business game, members of the team were asked to assess leadership influence of each member. At the end of the game, the computer program provided the study objective data on team performance. Results of this study supported that cognitive complexity was positively related to emergent leadership, and cognitive complexity of emergent leaders is positively related to team performance. These findings suggest that cognitive complexity ⁩琀攀愀洀desirable quality for effective leaders in self-managed teams.
