Research on the effects of technological innovation on total factor productivity - A case of Korean manufacturing industries based on quantitive and qualititive patent index -

In this study, an analysis on the relationship between total factor productivity(TFP) and technological innovation in Korean manufacturing industries from 1998 to 2003 was conducted using quantitative and qualitative patent indexes. Analysis on the whole manufacturing industries showd that only patent quality index takes significant effects on the growth of TFP. In-depth analysis showed that the effects of patent index on the growth of TFP differ by the technological level of the industry. Only patent quality index in mid-tech industries, both patent quantity and quality index in high-tech industries take significant effects on the growth of TFP.

1960년대 이후 우리나라의 고속 성장은 투입 요소의 증가에 기인했다고 평가되고 있고(Krugman, 1994), 최근 저조한 경제성장은 투입 요소의 증가를 통한 성장이 한계에 다다른 상태에서 기술혁신을 통한 생산성 제고가 이루어지지 못하고 있기 때문인 것으로 평가되고 있다(한국생산성본부, 2008).
