The purpose of this paper is to survey Hoapsa Temple, which is located in Hoamsan in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul. This study focuses on its history and value as a temple. The contents related to its establishment were considered with special concern. From the result, we confirm that Hoapsa has an establishment story related directly to a specific rock (mountain) named Hoam, that it was possibly established as one of the complementary temples (裨補道場) that protect the palace in Hanyang in the early Joseon dynasty, and that Muhak had been considered as the founder of the temple from the early period. Also considered in this study is the different titles that this temple held. Under the circumstantial evidence, we suggest that this temple has been called Hoapsa (虎壓寺) as currently since the 18th century. We considered different data related to the history of Hoapsa such as various geographic and temple-related documents and some poems written by scholars during Joseon dynasty since its establishment. Based on the survey, we confirmed that this temple had powerful influence between the 16 to 18 centuries. Besides, we present the situation of the temple and the substantial contents of the Buddhist Renovation in the 19th century, by introducing the whole sentences of ‘Newly-written Signboard for Hoapsa at Samseongsan Mountain’ (三聖山 虎壓寺 法堂新造 懸板文) in which sentences were possibly written by Uimin (義敏) in 1841. Moreover, through the Official Gazette published during the Japanese colonial era, we fathomed that four monks in total had served as the head of the temple and that a project of paintwork on the sanctuary was conducted in 1941. A temple’s value should be understood in the direction of considering all of its historical facts together with a future expectation. From this perspective, this study concludes as presenting the current situation of the temple and providing four aspects of values that Hoamsa shows as a temple. This study is expected to contribute to the literature in the study of the temple history.

이 논문은 서울시 금천구 호암산에 자리하고 있는 호압사의 역사와 사격을 정리하기 위한 목적을 지니고 작성되었으며, 본문에서는 먼저 호압사의 창건과 관계된 내용을 검토하였다. 그 결과 호압사는 호암이라고 하는 특정 바위(산)와 직결된 창건연기를 지니고 있다는 점, 호압사는 조선건국 초기 한양 궁궐을 수호하는 裨補道場의 하나로 창건되었을 가능성이 높다는 점, 그리고 비교적 이른 시기부터 무학대사는 호압사의 창건주로 인식되고 있었을 것이라는 점 등을 확인하게 되었다. 계속해서 호압사의 다양한 寺名과 관계된 내용을 검토하였는데, 여러 가지 정황상 18세기 이후부터 호압사는 현행 ‘虎壓寺’로 통칭되었을 가능성이 높아 보인다는 견해를 제시하였다. 창건 이후 조선시대 호압사 역사와 관계된 자료로 각종 지리지와 사찰지, 그리고 조선시대 문인들이 남긴 일부 시문들을 살펴보았는데, 이들 자료를 바탕으로 16-18세기의 호압사는 꾸준하게 寺勢를 유지하고 있었다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 본문에서는 1841년 작성된 것으로 보이는 義敏의 ｢三聖山 虎壓寺 法堂新造 懸板文｣이라는 자료의 전문을 소개하면서 이 시기 호압사의 실상과 중창불사의 구체적 내용도 검토해 보았다. 한편, 일제강점기 󰡔관보󰡕 자료를 통해 이 시기 호압사는 모두 네 명의 승려가 주지직을 역임한 것으로 파악하였으며, 1941년 법당 단청불사도 진행되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 사찰의 사격은 과거-현재-미래의 모습을 함께 아우르는 방향에서 논의될 필요가 있다. 이러한 관점에 따라 이 논문의 맺음말에서는 호압사의 ‘현재’와 관련한 부분을 포함시키면서 호압사의 사격을 크게 네 가지의 측면으로 나누어 서술하였다. 이 글이 향후 사찰사 연구 분야의 발전에 조금이라도 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대해본다.
