Based on understanding current issues of the domestic pharmaceutical industry, the present study attempted to seek proper ways to keep up with current affairs. Furthermore, we evaluated the management efficiency of Korean pharmaceutical firms listed in the KRX using an analysis of DEA model in order to look for effective ways allowing the firms to stand with the multinational pharmaceutical firms. In addition, our study suggested important factors affecting the management efficiency using a Tobit regression model. According to an efficiency analysis in 2011 for a CCR model, 12 DMUs were proved to be efficient and average efficiency of CCR was 0.85, showing that efficiency of overall DMUs was generally good. In addition, an analysis result of a BCC model indicated that 16 DMUs were efficiently measured and their average efficiency was 0.88. A Tobit regression model, which used input and output as independent variables and efficiency as dependent variable respectively, demonstrated that efficiency was negatively affected by input variables but positively affected by output variables. The result suggests that Korean pharmaceutical firms need more their efforts such as improvements of a production process and management environment than investment in input factors. In doing so, the firms needs fundamental changes in management strategies.
