The purpose of this thesis is to discuss War Paintings in Colonial Korea during the Asia-Pacific War. These paintings were painted by two groups consisting of both Korean and Japanese painters, respectively, and were discussed in the category of Pre-Japanese art until 1983. War paintings were painted under the policy of Japanization and the slogan ‘Korea and Japan are One,’ which was used since the second Sino-Japanese War, and were considered as propaganda media. Various groups of artists were formed to make propaganda, and they held exhibitions and lectures, etc. Although painters, who were Japanese Settlers in Korea, were similar to Japanese mainland painters in that they accompanied the army and painted the front, or painted scenes behind the front, they were depressed and did not show a positive attitude compared to Japanese mainland painters. An example is the case of Yamada Shinichi, a Japanese Settler in Korea who played a leading role when they painted the War Paintings during the Asia-Pacific War. Some Korean painters painted War Paintings under the policy of Japanization and the slogan ‘Korea and Japan are One’ in which Gu Bonwoong and Shim Hyonggu had confidence.

이 논문의 목적은 아시아태평양전쟁기 식민지 조선에서 그려진 전쟁화의 양상을 규명하는 것이다. 재조선일본인과 조선인 두 부류의 화가에 의해 그려진 아시아태평양전쟁기 조선의 전쟁화는 주로 친일미술의 범주에서 논의되어 왔으나 ‘친일미술’에 대한 종개념일 수 있을 뿐 범주가 다르다. 중일전쟁 이후 ‘내선일체’의 구호 아래 황민화정책을 배경으로 제작되고 수용된 전쟁화는 사상전의 프로파간다 매체로 인식되었다. 중일전쟁 발발 이후 전쟁선전을 위한 다양한 미술가단체의 결성과 활동이 있었고 강연회, 좌담회, 전람회 등을 통한 프로파간다가 이루어졌다. 재조선일본인 화가들의 경우 종군하여 전장의 광경을 그리거나 후방의 여성들을 주인공으로 한 장면들을 다루었다는 점에서 일본 본토의 전쟁화가들과 유사한 측면은 있었지만, 그들에 비해 후진성과 소극적인 태도가 두드러졌다. 야마다 신이치는 식민지 조선에서 주도적으로 전쟁화를 제작한 재조선일본인 화가의 대표적인 예다. 그에 비하면 조선인 화가들은 심형구나 구본웅과 같이 내선일체 구호를 내면화한 일부 화가들을 제외하면 수동적이고 소극적인 태도로 전쟁화를 제작하였다.
