This objective of this study is to examine, albeit roughly, the topography of Korean diasporic literature, focusing on the comparison between Korean-Canadian and Korean-American (North American) literature and Korean-Japanese literature. First, this study examined the thematic consciousness of Korean literature in both regions and found that 1) in both regions, the literature deeply explored wandering and agony, universality and man’s existential value in the immigrants’ self-identity. It also found that 2 ) in terms of the expression of consciousness of home (home country, the Korean race, home town, parents, friends, etc.), North American literature showed nostalgia for home and returning home, whereas Japanese diasporic literature dealt with political ideology and its related form, such as a repatriation ship to North Korea. 3) North American literature elaborated upon the pursuit of the self through realizing the American dream, but Japanese diasporic literature achieved pursuit of the self through struggling and resisting against Japan and its people. 4) In terms of the spatial backdrop of literature, North American literature depicted daily life in Korean Town as its center, whereas Korean-Japanese literature tended to include scenes of discrimination in Japan or Japanese society, family relations, suburbs of a city and workplace. 5) Specific comparisons between themes included the presence of church culture or Christianity, conflicts between generations, conflicts with local society, conflicts among immigrants, economic hardship, educational issues, issues relating to divorce, interracial marriage, juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, etc. However, both Korean diasporic literature in North America and Japanese diasporic literature formed their own identity as Korean diasporic literature expressed through “decentration,” “hybridity,” and “glocalism.” In other words, it remains as homework that Korean literature created abroad should retain self-awareness away from “collateral extension of Korean literature,” while English and Japanese literature created by Korean writers should clarify the position of “Korean-American literature” and “Korean-Japanese literature” as one of “minor ethnic literatures” to secure their self-perpetuating abilities.

본고에서는 개략적이나마 코리안 디아스포라 문학 지형도를 살펴보았고, 특히 북미지역(캐나다, 미국)의 코리안 문학과 재일 코리안 문학을 비교 관점에서 검토해 보았다. 먼저 이들 양 지역의 코리안 문학의 주제의식을 살펴보면, 1)이민자의 자기(민족) 정체성에 대한 방황과 고뇌, 보편성과 인간의 실존적 가치를 천착한다는 점은 공통적으로 나타난다. 2)고향(조국과 민족, 고향, 부모님, 친구 등)의식의 표현양상이 북미지역은 향수와 귀향의식인데 비해 재일 코리안 문학은 정치이데올로기와 연관된 형태(북송선 등)로 나타난다. 3)북미지역의 코리안 문학은 아메리칸드림의 실현을 통한 자아추구인데 비해 재일 코리안 문학은 일본/일본인을 상대로 투쟁/저항하면서 쟁취해 가는 형태의 자아추구라고 할 수 있다. 4)문학의 공간적 배경도 북미지역의 코리안 문학은 한국과 코리안타운 중심의 일상생활이 중심인데 비해 재일 코리안 문학은 민족의식을 둘러싼 일본/일본사회의 차별현장, 가족관계, 도시 변두리, 직장을 맴도는 경향을 보인다. 5)교회(기독교)문화의 유무를 비롯해서 세대간의 갈등, 현지사회와의 갈등, 이민자간의 갈등, 경제적 곤란, 교육문제, 이혼문제, 국제결혼, 청소년의 탈선, 마약 등과 같은 주제의식도 구체적인 비교론적 관점의 소재들이다. 하지만 북미지역의 코리안 문학과 재일 코리안 문학은 ‘탈중심화’와 ‘혼종성’ ‘글로컬리즘’으로 표상되는 코리안 디아스포라 문학으로서의 아이덴티티, 즉 해외에서 창작되는 한국어문학은 “한국문학의 방계적 연장”에서 벗어난 주체적 자의식을, 코리안 작가의 영어/일본어문학은 해당국의 주류문학의 자장 속에서 “한 소수계 민족문학”으로서의 ‘코리안 아메리칸 문학’, ‘재일 코리안 문학’의 위치를 명확히 하며 자생력을 확보해야 하는 과제도 안고 있다.
