This research involves an analysis of the English vowels([i][ɪ][e][æ][ʊ][u][ɔ][ʌ][ə][ɑ]) in Japanese Kana-notation. The results were examined to determine the tendency of these vowels in Japanese Kana-notation. Some examples of English vowels that do not exist as vowels in Japanese were considered. I suggest that the Japanese vowel [i] is reflected as the English vowels [ɪ]. The English vowel [ɪ] is reflected as the Japanese vowel [i] in many cases and is also reflected as the Japanese vowel [e] in a few cases, in which the Japanese vowel [e] is spelled as ‘e’ in the original language. I further suggest that the Japanese vowel [a] is reflected in the English vowels [ʌ], which is reflected as the Japanese vowel [a] in many cases. However, it is also reflected in the Japanese vowel [o] and [u] in a few cases and in this case, the Japanese vowels [o] and [u] are spelled as ‘o’ and ‘u’ respectively in the original language.

본고에서는 영어단모음([i][ɪ][e][æ][ʊ][u][ɔ][ʌ][ə][ɑ])가 어떻게 일본어로 표기되어 있는지를 분석하고, 그 결과에서 영어모음이 일본어에 대응하는 경향과 앞으로 각각 모음을 어떻게 가타카나로 표기하는 것이 적당하는지를 검토해 보았다. 그 중에서도 일본어모음에 존재하지 않는 모음의 결과를 몇 가지 예를 들어보면 이하와 같다. 영어모음 [ɪ]는 영어모음 [i]와 같이 일본어모음 i와 일본어모음 e로 반영되어있지만, 대부분이 일본어모음 i로 반영되어 있다는 것과 일본어모음 e로 반영되어 있는 예가 모두 원어표기 e의 영향을 받고 있다고 생각할 수 있다는 점, 그리고 일본어모음 i와도 조음위치가 가깝다는 점에서 영어모음 [ɪ]는 일본어모음 i로 표기하는 것이 적당하다고 판단된다. 영어모음 [æ]에 관해서는 대부분이 일본어모음 a로 반영되어 있지만, /k/, /g/가 앞에 위치할 경우에는 일본어반모음 ja로 반영되는 경향을 보였다. 영어모음 [æ]는 일본어모음 a로 표기하는 것이 적합하다고 생각되지만, 영어모음 [æ]앞에 /k/, /g/가 올 경우에 관해서는 일본어반모음 ja로 반영하는 것도 시야에 넣을 필요가 있다. 영어모음 [ʌ]는 대부분이 일본어모음 a로 반영되어 있으며, 다른 일본어모음으로 반영되는 예는 모두 원어 스펠링의 영향을 받고 있다. 영어모음 [ʌ]를 포함하는 단어는 [グローブ][グラブ]나 [カンパニー][コンパニー] 등 일본어에서 표기가 공존하고 있는 단어들이기 때문에 일본어모음 a로 표기를 통일할 수 있다는 장점을 기대할 수 있다.
