The purpose of this paper is to propose a new approach to the research subject “The Cultural Power of Imperial Japan”. The approach aims to suggest ways in which to resolve the crisis of Japanese studies in Korea resulting from the deterioration of diplomatic relations and mutual recognition between Korea and Japan. The Tohoku Earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear accident frightened Korea. The recent anti-Korean movement led by Zaitokukai referred to as “Hate speech” could be classified as a racist attempt to infringe upon the human rights of Koreans. The most disappointing issue is Japan’s historical revisionism and distorted historical perception. Finding a solution to normalize mutual recognition would require us to establish an appropriate direction. As a possible approach, the research of Noh published as “The Cultural Power of Imperial Japan” may be suggested. As a symbol of hierarchy, Noh functioned as an effective guideline for the cross-border colonizer and colonist. Noh’s work deserves attention, because his interpretation of the performing arts is the closest symbolism to the power of the state. This research would enable a map to be drawn of the cultural power bestowed upon Korean society by the colonial power and culture of the Japanese colonizers. Moreover, the result of this research will emphasize our great inheritance and enable us to reflect on post-1945 society.

이 논문의 목적은 오늘날 한일관계와 상호인식의 악화를 극복하기 위해서 한국의 일본연구가 무엇을 바라보고 어디로 가야 하는지에 대한 물음에 대답하기 위해서 ‘제국일본의 문화권력 연구’라는 하나의 접근을 제시하고 그에 대한 가능성을 확인하는 데에 있다. ‘문화권력’이란 일상생활의 관습과 풍속, 개인의 사상과 종교, 정치와 경제적 구조 그리고 예술과 과학의 제 분야에 녹아들어 작용하는 권력을 의미하며, 가시적/비가시적인 형태로 그리고 강제적/유화적 형태로 피지배자의 일상과 사회구조에 침투해서 지배질서를 구축하고 사회와 문화 자체를 변화시키는 권력의 총체이다. 이 연구를 제시하는 까닭은 오늘날 우리 사회를 근본부터 다시 검증하기 위해서는 1945년 이전의 식민지사회에서 형성된 문화권력의 동태와 실체를 먼저 파악하고, 해방 후에 우리가 식민지사회의 유산을 무엇을 어떠한 기준으로 취하고 사하였는지를 확인할 필요가 있으며, 또한 유효하기 때문이다. 이 논문에서는 일본을 대표하는 노(能)가 단순한 아름답고 정적인 미의식을 가진 예능이 아니라 제국일본의 국가예능으로서 위관과 국위를 나타내는 데 동원되었다는 사실을 역사적 사실로 확인함으로써 제국일본과 노, 권력과 예능이 그려내는 동태를 파악하고자 한다. 이는 1차적으로는 식민지 문화권력 연구로서 완결되나 2차적으로는 오늘날 우리의 자화상을 탐구하기 위한 기초 작업이기도 하다.
