‘Fairness’, this concept is a improtant agenda in Neo-Confucianism. This paper, first, analyses Zhu Xi’ idea about Xieju(絜矩) and then compares it with Dasan’s thought. Further it tries to find out two kind of thoughts about fairness in the east. According to this paper, Zhu Xi interpreted Xieju into two kind of significances, first is ‘Measure others and treat them as fair as a square’, second is ‘Measure others by the square of my own mind’ This paper illuminates Zhu Xi’s idea about fairness by focusing on the latter, and elucidates its philosophical meaning. Zhu Xi regarded establishing of universal moral subject as precondition of performing Xieju, so stressed on becoming fair subject in the first place. His Opinion, however, seems to reduce the value of Xieju to the second. Dasan criticised Zhu Xi and re-interpreted Xieju as relation-centered ethics. It was more important for Dasan to understand the character of humanity relation and catch one’s moral duty than establishing of universal moral subject. According to him, one can become fair moral subject at the time when he/she return the requests of others to the self and to reflect one’s own moral duty. In a word, Dasan thought that fairness did not preexist but was immanent in human relation on the contrary

공정성의 문제는 유가철학 전반에 펼쳐있는 핵심적 의제이다. 이 논문에서는 『대학』｢평천하｣장의 絜矩之道에 대한 朱子의 해석과 입장을 분석하고 나아가 다산의 견해와 비교해보면서, 공정성에 관한 두 의견을 고찰하였다. 주자는 혈구를 두 가지의 의미로 해석하는데, 이 논문은 주자가 혈구를 ‘직각자로 헤아린다’고 해석했던 것에 초점을 맞추어 서와혈구의 사상을 분석하고 그 철학적 함의를 탐구하고 있다. 논문에 따르면, 주자는 보편타당한 도덕 주체의 수립이 선결되어야 서와 혈구의 적절한 수행이 가능하다고 주장하였고, 이러한 점에서 주자는 도덕 수양을 통한 공정무사한 주체의 수립을 강조하였다. 그러나 이러한 주자의 주장은 서와 혈구의 의미를 부차적인 것으로 축소하는 것처럼 보인다. 논문에 따르면, 다산은 주자의 입장을 비판하면서 서와 혈구를 관계 중심적 상호성의 윤리로 재해석한다. 다산은 공정무사한 도덕 주체의 수립보다 인륜 관계의 특성을 이해하고 그로부터 자기의 도덕적 의무를 파악하는 것이 중요하다고 보았다. 그는 인륜 공동체의 관계망 안에서 타인의 요구를 주체에게로 환원하여 반성할 때 공정한 주체의 조건이 마련될 수 있다고 주장하였다. 요컨대 주체의 공정성은 관계에 초월하기보다 오히려 내재하는 것이라고 생각했던 것이다.
