This paper is to consider, from philosophical viewpoint, the spirit of integrity of Chwi-geum-heon Park Paeng Nyeon who had drawn up a plan to restore Dan-jong’s throne and be killed. Recent research on Park Paeng Nyeon is mainly from historical or literary viewpoints. In this paper, the author examines and arranges his intention and theoretical foundation. It means the spiritual basis of his life and activities is the object of this paper. Based on the research, it can be seen that in his opinion, the indicator of the life is the Confucian spirit, and his heart is full of the Confucian viewpoint on truth. He specially emphasizes the realization of Humaneness and Righteousness (仁義), and the Filial Piety and Brotherly love (孝悌), as well as the importance of the Humaneness and Righteousness. That spirit, inherent inside him, became the power of his resistance against the unjustified usurp of Se-jo. Disregarding all riches and honors, and choosing the way to death is not the thing that everyone can do. Park Paeng Nyeon’s choice in order to realize the Righteousness is the very realm of ‘dying as a martyr to the Humaneness (殺身成仁)’ that Confucius has said, and similar to Mencius’ opinion that ‘giving up the life for the Righteousness (捨生取義)’. That is not the limitation of being controlled by sensation in which the indignation cannot be swallowed, but the expression of the so-called ‘unbearing mind (不忍人之心)’, means being unable to bear the injustice. The contemporary reality that we are living in is, politically speaking, the society directing to the democracy, and economically speaking, the capitalist system. That is the society in which the material values overwhelm the spiritual ones, and material property becomes the goal, not only the means, of people’s life. Even the value judgment of the rightness and the wrongness, and the meaning of doing the Good, can lose their power in front of the material benefits. To the modern people who are tormented by the question of choosing the righteousness or the riches and honors, the way of life that Park Paeng Nyeon chose can be seen as a clear signpost.

이 논문은 단종의 복위를 계획하다 죽음을 맞이한 취금헌 박팽년의 절의정신에 대한 철학적 고찰을 목적으로 한다. 그동안의 박팽년과 관련된 연구는 주로 역사와 문학적 관점에서 이루어져 왔다. 이에 이 글에서는 그의 사상적 지향과 바탕은 무엇인가를 검토하는것에 의미를 두고 정리하였다. 그의 삶과 행위를 이끈 학문적 혹은 정신적 바탕은 무엇인가를 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 이를 통해서 그가 삶의 지표로 삼고 있는 것은 유학의 정신이며, 유학적 진리관이 그의마음에 담겨져 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 인의(仁義)와 효제(孝悌)의 실천에 대한 강조와인정(仁政)의 필요성을 역설하는 것에서 이를 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 의식의 내면에 자리한 정신들이 세조의 부당한 권력 찬탈에 항거하는 힘으로 작용한 것이다. 눈앞의 부귀와 명예를 버리고 죽음의 길을 선택하는 것은 아무나 할 수 있는 것이 아니다. 의로움을 실현하기 위한 박팽년의 선택은 공자가 말한 살신성인(殺身成仁)의 경지이며, 맹자의 사생취의(捨生取義)와 맥락을 같이 하고 있다고 하겠다. 이것은 분노의 감정을 삭이지 못하는 감정 지배의 한계가 아닌, 불의를 보고 차마 견딜 수 없는 불인인지심(不忍人之心)의 표출인 것이다. 우리가 지금 살고 있는 현대는 정치적으로는 민주주의를 지향하는 사회이며, 경제적으로는 자본주의 체제에 있다. 물질의 가치가 정신적 가치를 압도하는 사회이며, 물질은 살아가기 위한 수단이 아니라 삶의 목적처럼 되어버렸다. 옳고 그름의 가치적 판단과 선을실천하고자 하는 의미마저 물질적 이익 앞에서 때로는 힘을 잃기도 한다. 이러한 의로움을 선택할 것인가? 아니면 명예와 이익을 선택할 것인가 하는 갈림길에서 고뇌하는 현대인에게 박팽년이 선택한 삶의 길은 이정표와 같은 것이라 할 수 있다.
