At the end of the twentieth century, the phenomenon of “Cultural Christians” rising within China caused a great sensation in the Christian theological circles and even in the Chinese academic circles. For Christians, “Cultural Christians” are humanities scholars. And for humanities scholars, “Cultural Christians” are theologians. In this way, they paved a way for the harmony between theology and humanities. The phenomenon of “Cultural Christians” was originally “a spiritual-cultural phenomenon” in which Chinese intellectuals were interested in the spirit of Christianity. Thus it had not only religious implications but also cultural-sociological connotations. As a cultural community, they formed a response to the problem of modernity in a religious level. Their basic purpose was to reconstruct a moral ground of secular society with the help of the spirit of Christianity. Thus their pulpit was not a church, a monastery, or a theological seminary, but a university or a social science institute under a communist cultural system of China. Because of such a unique identity, “Cultural Christians” gained many adherents, but at the same time they provoked a lot of disputes. Thus this paper tries to define their formative background and the essence of their unique identity, by examining several debates regarding them. And then this paper makes an attempt to deal with the significance of their existence and the direction for their future.

지난 20세기 말에, 중국학계에 일어났던 “문화그리스도인” 현상은 중국 국내외 기독교계는 물론 중국 일반학계에까지 큰 돌풍을 일으켰다. “문화그리스도인”들은 기독교인들에게는 인문학자요, 인문학자들에게는 신학자로 인식되면서, 신학과 인문학의 조화를 이루어 냈다. “문화그리스도인” 현상은 공산당 문화제도 안에서 기독교 정신에 대한 신앙적 관심에 의해 나타난 중국 지식인들의 “정신-문화 현상”으로, 단순히 신앙적 의미만을 갖는 것 아니라 문화-사회학적 함의도 지닌다. 그들은 하나의 문화 群體를 이루면서 종교적 차원에서 “현대성 문제”(the problem of modernity)를 다룬다. 그들의 근본 목적은 기독교 정신으로 세속화 사회의 도덕적 기초를 재건하는 것이다. 그리하여 그들의 강단은 교회나 수도원 혹은 신학원이 아니라, 공산당 문화 제도권 내 중국 대학들이었다. 이들의 독특한 정체성은 많은 추종자를 낳기도 했지만 많은 논쟁을 불러일으키기도 했다. 본 논문은 “문화그리스도인”들이 형성하게 되는 역사 정치적 배경과 그들의 지적-정신적 고뇌의 과정을 살펴보고, 그들의 독특한 정체성의 본질을 그들을 둘러싸고 일어났던 논쟁들을 통해서 규명하게 될 것이다. 그리고 이들이 중국 기독교와 중국 정신사 속에서 갖는 의미와 나아가야 할 방향에 대해서 짚어본다.
