The purpose of this paper is to review the historical interpretation and missional implications on the growth and schism of Korean churches with the perspective of Samuel H. Moffett (1916-2015). He was born in Pyongyang as the third son of Samuel A. Moffett (1864-1939). He studied at Pyongyang Foreign School, Wheaton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1945, under the supervision of K. S. Latourette. He was influenced by thought of his father, Kenneth Latourette, Robert Speer, and Lesslie Newbigin. In 1947, he was sent to China as a missionary. After being expelled by the influence of communism in 1951, he was sent to Korea as a Korean missionary in 1955 and committed the training of Korean church leadership and theological education for 26 years. In 1959, he promoted unity in the context of the schism of Korean churches and took the leadership in cooperating with the world church. He defined the sin of self-containment as lack of meaningful contact with the non-Christian world. He contributed to unity in the schism of Korean church and to strengthen solidarity with the world church. He laid the foundation of the ecumenical mission in Korean church.

본 논문은 마삼락(Samuel H. Moffett, 1916-2015)의 한국교회 성장과 분열에 대한 역사적 해석과 그 선교적인 함의를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 그는 평양에서 마포삼열(Samuel A. Moffett, 1864-1939) 선교사의 셋째 아들로 태어나 평양외국인학교, 미국 휘튼대학교, 프린스턴신학교를 거쳐 1945년 예일대학교에서 박사학위를 받았다. 마삼락은 마포삼열, 라투레트, 스피어, 뉴비긴 등의 영향을 받았다. 1947년 중국선교사로 파송을 받았고, 1951년 공산주의의 영향으로 추방을 당한 후 1955년 한국 선교사로 파송을 받고 26년간 한국교회의 지도력 양성과 신학교육에 이바지하였다. 1959년 마삼락은 한국교회 분열의 역사 속에서 연합과 일치를 도모하였고 세계 교회와의 협력에 앞장섰다. 그는 교회의 자기봉쇄(自己封鎖)가 선교를 방해하는 걸림돌이고 연합을 해치는 죄라고 비판하였다. 그는 교회의 본질은 선교와 연합에로 부르심에 있음을 상기시켰고, 한국교회를 위하여 에큐메니칼 선교의 초석을 놓았다.
