In this essay I outline what characterizes Cultural Studies as developed in the tradition of British Cultural Studies and what makes it an inspiring approach for art education. Starting from the “ordinariness of culture” that includes both, people’s agency as well as the forces of structural constraints, and an understanding of the relational nature of reality, key concepts like conjunctural analysis, radical contextuality and articulation are addressed. The paper ends with an elaboration of what can be considered the main concern of both cultural studies and art; that is responding to and intervening into historic specific conjunctures.
