Eric Erikson defines Identity as "Continuity of self, Sense of oneness, singularity, uniqueness and Consciousness of Individual Sameness". He also distinguishes between Individual Identity and Social Identity. Individual Identity means a sense of within sameness and continuity, while Social Identity means feelings of unity with the institution to which he belongs and a sense of oneness to the institution, because of his sharing of values with it. Erikson insists that a man can form his Social Identity, based upon Individual Identity and as many people share a same Social Identity, they are likely to develope it continuously. This study focuses on the trendy of today's church in that it cannot supply enough environment for intimate relationship between Jesus Christ and Christians to get firm Christian Identity through church life. And also based upon this study, I try to insist that church community help people to inspect their life and hardships deeply to get true meanings enough to raise Christian Identity through meeting Jesus Christ intimately. In this point, Yoon-Dong Ju's Development of Christian Thought and his anguish in finding his real self can be explained as a try connecting his Individual Identity and Social Identity. In this essay, I insist that Yoon-Dong Ju's endeavor of Forming his own Christian Identity can send a message to today's christian in three points: "Improvement of Self-Awareness", "Proper Spiritual Growth" and "Becoming Communities in expressing and embracing of Weakness" through personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

에릭슨은 정체성이란 “한 개인이 자신이 연속된 존재이며 독립되어 있는 존재로 인식하는 감각”이라고 정의한다. 또한 그는 정체성을 개인적 측면과 사회적 측면으로 구분해서 설명한다. 개인적 정체성은 개인으로서 자기 자신에 대하여 가지는 동일성과 연속성에 대한 감각을 뜻하고, 사회적 정체성은 자기 자신과 관계있는 어떤 조직에 대해서 일치성을 간직하고, 개인이 그 조직의 어떤 가치를 공유하기 때문에 그 조직에 속했다고 느끼는 연대감을 뜻한다. 에릭슨은 인간은 개인정체성에 근거해서 사회정체성을 형성하게 되며, 동일한 사회정체성을 공유하는 구성원들의 개인정체성이 끊임없이 그들이 속한 사회정체성을 발전시킨다고 말한다. 필자는 오늘날 교회의 신앙생활이 예수 그리스도와의 지속적인 인격적 만남을 통하여 신앙인으로서의 정체성을 성장시키도록 돕기 어려운 경향을 보인다는 관점에서 논의를 전개한다. 또한 교회 공동체가 성도들로 하여금 삶의 상황과 고난가운데에서 그 의미를 진지하게 살펴보도록 도와서, 성도들이 신앙인의 정체성을 형성하고 성장시키려는 노력을 기울일 때에 형식적인 신앙에서 벗어날 수 있다는 입장을 취한다. 이런 관점에서 필자는 구체적으로 역사적 인물인 윤동주의 고뇌의 삶과 그 삶에서 만들어진 시문학은 개인 정체성과 사회정체성을 신앙적 관점에서 신앙적 정체성으로 연결시켜서 성장하려는 분투의 시도라고 본다. 본 연구는 윤동주의 정체성의 성장에 대한 시도가 오늘날 교회에게 예수 그리스도와의 인격적 만남을 통하여“자신에 대한 인식 능력을 키워가기”, “영적 성숙을 지향하기”, “약함을 수용하는 공동체 되기”라는 세 가지 과제를 실천할 것을 권유하는 메시지를 던진다고 보았다.
