This study will discuss the role of spiritual journal as a spiritual training method for Christian spiritual formation. By analysing spiritual journal from the viewpoint of spiritual formation, we will identify the role that spiritual journal plays in Christian spiritual formation. The Christian spiritual formation is a key topic in Christian Divinity. It refers to the process in which one gradually resembles God in Holy spirit, through Jesus Christ. The essence of Christian spiritual formation is a gradual process, an emulation, Christ’s form, and living the life for others. A spiritual formation is not far from a spiritual growth. However, a spiritual journal is a catalyst for spiritual growth and one of many methods of spiritual training. The essence of spiritual journal is growing to the extent of Jesus Christ and becoming one with him. Therefore, both Christian spiritual formation and spiritual journal share the same purpose and direction. The core capabilities of of Christian spiritual formation are a formation of one’s spirit, emotions, relationships, intelligence, calling, physical health and efficient use of resources. Through these seven core capabilities, we, humans, emulate Jesus Christ and restore in us God’s form. If so, which of these core capabilities can be developed through the keeping of spiritual journal? Keeping a spiritual journal helps develop an ability to consolidate one’s inner thoughts, refine one’s emotions, make intelligent judgements, discover one’s inner being, confirm one’s calling, maintain one’s physical health, improve relationships with others, and grow spiritually. Here, we find similarities in core capabilities between Christian spiritual formation and a spiritual journal. Therefore, a spiritual journal is one method of spiritual training but keeping of the journal contains many abilities and elements of Christian spiritual formation. The core capabilities of spiritual journal are very similar to that of the spiritual formation. Thus, from the viewpoint of Christian spiritual formation, keeping of a spiritual journal is a simple spiritual training but one that is very effective and powerful. Here, we can see the presence, that a spiritual journal has within the Christian spiritual formation remit.

종교개혁 500주년을 맞이하여 종교개혁의 입장에서 한국교회를 분석하고 진단한 학술대회가 곳곳에서 열리고 있다. 한국교회의 위기의 본질을 ‘개혁의 부재’ ‘신학교육의 빈곤’ ‘경건의 결핍’ 등에서 찾는다. 하지만 많은 사람들은 오래전부터 한국교회의 위기를 ‘경건의 위기’ 즉 ‘영성의 위기’로 인식하고 있다. 진단과 인식은 공유하지만 뚜렷한 대안이 없는데 어려움이 있다. ‘영성의 위기’를 논하는 담론은 풍성하나 교회공동체는 영성에 대한 올바른 이해는 물론이고 체계화된 영성훈련을 실시하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 필자는 현재 한국교회 신앙들이 실천하고 있는 영성훈련의 한 방법인 ‘영성일기’를 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구는 영성훈련의 한 방법으로 ‘영성일기’가 기독교인의 영성형성에 어떤 역할을 하는지를 논구할 것이다. 영성형성의 관점에서 ‘영성일기’를 분석함으로써 ‘영성일기’ 훈련이 영성형성에 어떤 역할을 하는지를 밝힐 것이다. 기독교 영성형성은 성령 안에서 그리스도를 통해 하나님의 형상을 닮아가는 여정이다. 이러한 기독교 영성형성의 본질은 지속적인 진행 과정, 본받는 것, 그리스도의 형상, 그리고 다른 사람을 위한 삶에서 찾을 수 있다. 영성형성은 기독교인의 영적 성장의 과정과 다르지 않다. 그런데 영성일기는 청교도 신앙인들이나 현대 영성가들의 삶에서 나타나듯이 영적 성장의 촉매가 되는 영성훈련의 한 방법이다. 영성훈련의 방법으로 영성일기 쓰기의 본질은 그리스도의 분량에게까지 자라 그리스도와 하나 되는데 있다. 따라서 기독교 영성형성과 영성일기는 서로 추구하는 방향과 목적 같다고 할 수 있다. 기독교 영성형성의 핵심 역량은 영의 형성, 감정의 형성, 관계의 형성, 지성의 형성, 소명의 형성, 육체적 건강의 형성, 그리고 자원을 효과적으로 관리하는 능력에 있다. 이러한 7가지 핵심 역량을 통해 인간은 예수 그리스도를 본받고, 급기야 하나님의 형상을 회복한다. 그러면 영성일기 쓰기를 통해 개발되는 핵심역량은 어떤 것이 있는가. 영성일기를 쓰는 가운데 내면의 통합 능력, 감정의 순화 능력, 지성적 판단의 능력, 자신의 발견 능력, 소명확인의 능력, 육체의 건강 유지 능력, 타자와의 관계의 증진 능력, 영적인 성숙의 능력 등이 함양된다. 우리는 여기서 기독교 영성형성의 핵심역량과 영성일기를 쓰는 가운데 개발되는 핵심역량과 유사함을 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 분석에서 영적성장의 과정에서 영성일기의 요소들과 영성형성의 요소들이 많은 부분에서 유사함을 발견할 수 있다. 이것은 영성일기가 기독교인의 영성형성 과정에 중요한 역할을 하는 것을 보여주는 것이다. 따라서 기독교 영성형성의 관점에서 볼 때 영성일기는 단일한 영성훈련이지만 아주 효과적이고 능력 있는 영성훈련임을 알 수 있다.
