In college education, General education is now entering a stabilization phase. Therefore, discussion on General education should also be a transition to research for qualitative improvement. In this context, this study examined the correlation between the operating system of General education and the level of General education, focusing on the case of S University. In Chapter 2, according to the criteria presented by Korea National Institute for General Education, this study classified the process of change of the dedicated department for General Education in S university, and diachronically examined the correlation between the operating system of General education at each stage and the curriculum of General education. In Chapter 3, it has examined the status of the curriculum of General education by comparing the curriculums of S University and other Universities and then suggested improvements. The fundamental problems in the curriculum of General education are caused from the fact that the curriculum of General education and the basic curriculum are not clearly separated. Therefore, it is necessary to organize the curriculum of General education corresponding to the sub-curriculums in accordance with the objectives of General education.

대학교육 내에서 교양교육은 이제 안정화 단계에 접어들고 있다. 이에 따라 교양교육에 대한 논의 역시 질적 개선을 위한 연구로 전환해야 할 때이다. 이러 맥락에서 본 논문은 S대의 사례를 중심으로 교양교육 운영체계와 교양교육의 질적 수준의 상관성을 고찰했다. 2장에서는 한국교양기초교육원이 제시한 기준에 따라 S대 교양교육 전담기구의 변화과정을 3단계로 구분하고, 각 단계에 따른 교양교육의 운영체계와 교양교육과정의 상관성을 통시적으로 고찰했다. 3장에서는 S대의 교양교육과정과 타 대학의 교양교육 과정의 비교를 통해 교양교육과정의 운영체계의 실태를 분석하고 개선안을 살펴봤다. 교양교육과정에서 빚어지는 근원적인 문제는 교양교육과 전공기초교육이 명확하게 분리되지 않아서 비롯된 것이니, 하위 영역에 해당하는 방만한 교과목을 교양교육의 목표에 상응하도록 체계화할 필요가 있다.
