This study aims at exploring how students’ school maladjustment is identified and interpreted from the teacher’s point of view, and drawing their implications. Using qualitative research methodology, 12 school teachers with long teaching experience are carefully selected and interviewed in depth. The findings of the interviews show that teachers’ understanding and experience of school maladjustment are largely categorized into three ways: its meaning and patterns, reasons, and solutions. First, concerning the meaning of school maladjustment, most teachers recognize school maladjusted students as “students who do not want to come to school.” In addition, the patterns of school maladjustment in the class vary from ‘sleeping in front of the teacher’ to ‘disturbing others.’ Second, reasons for school maladjustment also vary from family factors to educational system factors. Third, the alternatives to make the school desirable for students are suggested in 3 ways: ‘teachers and schools should be changed’, ‘interesting and engaging class should be provided’ and ‘building a school culture that students decide and discuss.’ Finally, the implications of the study are discussed in order to solve the problem of students’ school maladjustment.

본 연구는 교사들의 시선에서 학생의 학교부적응 양상은 어떻게 표출되고 해석되는지 면밀히 탐색해 보고 시사점을 도출하고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 교직 경력이 오래된 12명의 현장 교사들을 대상으로 ‘학교부적응’ 이라는 현상이 각자가 처한 교육적 맥락과 경험 속에서 어떻게 이해되는지 심층적으로 파악하고자 질적 연구방법을 수행하였다. 교사들과의 면담 분석결과, 학생들의 학교부적응과 관련한 교사의 시선과 경험은 크게 학교부적응의 의미와 양상, 이유, 해결가능성 측면에서 총 3가지로 유형화할 수 있게 해주었다. 먼저, 대부분의 면담교사들은 학교부적응 학생의 의미를 ‘학교에 오고 싶어 하지 않는 아이들’로 이해하고 있었다. 또한 학교에 부적응한 아이들의 모습은 ‘대놓고 자는 아이’, ‘방해하는 아이’, ‘멍 때리는 아이’ 등으로 묘사되었다. 다음으로, 학교부적응의 이유들로는 ‘방치되어서 또는 금수저라서’, ‘엄마랑 얘기해 보면 답이 나와요’등의 가정적 요인들부터 ‘뭘 해도 안 되니까, 안 해도 되니까’ 등의 교육 및 입시제도 요인들까지 다양하다는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 마지막으로, 지금과 같은 교육현실에서 학생들에게 ‘오고 싶은 학교’로 만들어줄 수 있는 길로는 ‘교사가 바뀌고 학교가 바뀌어야’, ‘참여할 수 있는 수업, 즐거운 수업으로’, ‘자기들이 정하고 합의해야’등의 의견들이 제시되었다. 이상의 연구 결과를 통해, 학교현장에서 학생들의 학교부적응 문제를 해결해 나가기 위해 주목해야할 시사점을 도출해 보았다.
