Seok Joo Myung(1908~1950) is a representative butterfly scholar of Korea, an Esperanto activist and a pioneer of Jeju studies. Not only did he become a master of the butterfly field, he established a broad academic world that encompasses natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. He has also received a blend and reconciliation of regionalism, nationalism, and globalism. He was a universal pacifist that knowledge and wisdom should be shared by all, a subjective empiricist with an emphasis on reality, an objective rationalist that academic theories should be approved by all, and an equalitarian that every region or nation should have equal rights. He did not disrespect old things or new things, and he reconciled humanities with natural sciences, localism with globalism, tradition with modernity, and speciality with universality. He is a versatile scholar who is attainable in various fields, not merely in one field, and is a harmonious scholars who accept and integrate different ideas or perspectives. As we are in the era of integrated sciences and we live in glocal(global and local) world, we will get a lot of messages from his academic attitude.

석주명(1908~1950)은 우리나라의 대표적인 나비학자이면서 에스페란토운동가이자 제주학의 선구자이다. 그는 자신의 전문인 나비 분야에서 일가를 이루었을 뿐만 아니라, 자연과학과 인문사회 분야까지도 아우르는 폭넓은 학문세계를 구축하였고, 지역주의, 민족주의, 세계주의 어느 한 쪽을 배척하거나 매몰되지 않고 서로 받아들여 잘 조화를 이뤘다. 그는 현실을 중시하는 주체적 경험주의자이면서도 학문적 이론은 만인에게 승인되어야 한다는 객관적 합리주의자였고, 각 지역이나 민족은 동등한 권리를 지녀야 한다는 평등주의자이면서도 지식과 지혜는 누구나 함께 공유해야 한다는 보편적 평화주의자였다. 그는 오래된 것이라 폄하하거나 새로운 것이라 해서 경시하지 않았으며, 인문학과 자연과학, 지역과 세계, 전통과 현대, 특수와 보편 등을 자연스럽게 넘나들며 융섭하였다. 어느 한 분야만이 아닌 다양한 분야에 두루 능통한 그의 통재적(通才的) 연구와 서로 다른 이념이나 관점을 배척하지 않고 받아들여 녹여내어 화합하는 그의 융섭적(融攝的) 학문태도는 학문 융복합의 시대이자 지역과 세계를 아우르며 살아가야 하는 우리에게 많은 메시지를 던져준다.
