This study traces the new pattern of Maria W. Stewart's resistance through her speeches. As an African-American, her pioneering efforts opened the doors for other African-American women as well as for white women to challenge conventional theories of religion and the status and role of women. Within the American cultural context, African-American women have had to deal with the double bind of racial and gender discrimination. During the nineteenth century, white women as well as black women were rarely permitted to speak in public. In this situation, Stewart's speeches in public were a radical challenge to the social role and status given to black women. In her public political speech and in the publication of her speeches, Stewart was a forerunner. Stewart extended the platform by asserting what she believed to be her God-ordained authority in human rights issues. Stewart's speeches were characterized by a large framework of communalism, the combination of religion and politics, and 'Woman Question'. First, she emphasized the black community by saying 'our nation, race, and compatriots'. Especially, she attempted to dismantle their image imprinted as incompetent and inferior beings in American society and redefine the ethnicity of blacks. Second, she attempted to reform politics by combining religious aspects. Stewart tried to practice social reforms in a way that blended her own thoughts with the bible to describe oppressions and discriminations which African-American have experienced since the beginning of the American history. In short, it is a way in which past and present coexist. Furthermore, she extended the scope of speeches from political to social issues beyond the boundary of evangelical religion. In conclusion, Stewart redefined black women's right to speak in terms of race and gender discourse and turned black women into 'subject' of resistance. To her, the 'platform' represents a space of resistance that can break the prejudice and boundaries of the gender, class, and race of the nineteenth century in America.
