After years of the united ecumenical councils, Jeonbuk presbytery had been included in Jeonbuk agency at the time of the Korea presbytery, after then, it belongs to Jeolla presbytery by the formation of the general assembly of presbyterian of Chosun. With the division of Jeolla presbytery into Jeonnam and Jeonbuk presbytery at the seventh general meeting in 1917, Jeonbuk presbytery made the Jeonbuk province and the part of Jeju province as the missionary area. Jeonbuk presbytery was distributed over a wide area of Jeonbuk not only Jeonju and Wanju but also the very small towns and the newly formed cities such as Iksan, and Gunsan. Although there are some local variations, with the decrease in believers in Gunsan and Jinan, with the increase in believers in some area in Jeonbuk, comparing the number of the believers with the annual population, the rate of believers growth was found higher than the average rate of population growth. The increase the number of believers varied with the activities and situations of local churches. It is regarded the increase the officers of the churches as the rise and influence of Christians. It is regarded as the expansion and the increased influence power of Christianity over the area of Jeonbuk presbytery that the steady increase of the number of church service members such as the ministers, the elders, deacons and intern deacons

미국 남장로교 선교부에 의해서 시작된 전라북도 지역의 선교는 먼저 군산과 전주선교부를 설립하고 교회 본고에서 교회란 지역에 설립된 개신교에서 장로교회를 주로 의미하며, 기독교는 개신교를 지칭하는 의미로 사용하였다. , 학교, 병원을 중심으로 선교활동을 진행하였다. 목사들로 구성된 선교사들은 교회를 개척하고 설립함으로써 전라북도 지역에 기독교를 확산하였다. 교세가 확산됨에 따라 목사 선교사들과 한국인 목사들을 치리하고 파송하는 상위기관으로서 1907년 대한예수교장로회 독노회를 조직하였다. 전북 초기교회는 독노회 시기에는 전북대리회로 편재되었다가 조선예수교장로회총회가 성립하면서 전남과 광주, 제주도를 포함한 전라노회에 소속하였다가 1917년 제7회 총회 때 전남노회와 전북노회로 분노회 하였다. 전북노회는 전북지역과 충남·제주 일부지역을 선교지역으로 삼았다. 전북노회는 전주·완주를 비롯한 익산과 군산 등 도시는 물론이고 군읍까지 교회를 설립함으로써 교회는 지역적으로 균등하게 분포하였다. 전북노회는 주요지역에 거점교회를 설립하고 이 교회들이 중심이 되어 지역교회들을 분립 개척함으로서 전북지역에 교세를 확장하였다. 전주·완주지역, 익산, 김제 지역의 교회와 교인수가 많이 증가하였다. 교인 현황은 1919년 3·1운동 여파로 감소를 제외하고 매년 6-8백명 증가하였다. 특히 세례로 입교한 교인은 1935년 868명이었는데, 이는 대사경회의 결과이었다. 전북지역교회는 세례로 입교하는 교인을 늘리기 위해 교회들은 사경회, 시장전도, 전도부인 동원 등 다양한 선교방법을 사용하였다. 전북노회 초기 교회 확산과 함께 각 지역별 교인 증감의 현황을 비교하였다. 감소된 군산, 진안지역과 증가된 여타 지역에 대하여 연도별 인구수와 교인수를 비교할 때, 평균 인구증가율을 초월하는 교인증가비율이었다. 교인 증가는 지역의 경제활동이나 도시화에 따라 차이가 있었다. 전북교회 직원 증가는 곧 기독교 교세 확장이었다. 대표직원인 목사와 장로, 그리고 꾸준히 증가한 장립집사와 서리집사는 맡은 역할과 임무를 통해 기독교 교세의 확장은 물론 지역사회에 기독교의 영향력을 높였다. 본고는 전북노회회의록에 기록된 구체적인 통계자료를 기초하여 전북 초기선교에서 전북노회를 통한 교회 설립 및 교인의 증가와 교세 확장을 연구하였다. 구체적인 통계자료를 이용한 전라북도 전체 교회에 관한 연구는 본 논문이 유일하다. 앞으로 교세 확장에 따른 교회의 활동과 재정운용을 통해 전북 초기선교에서 전북노회가 전북 지역에 기여한 바를 연구할 것이다.
