This article examines the research mindset of an erudite but practical scholar of Korea’s Choson Dynasty. Hwang Yeon-Seok (黃胤錫) was a distinctive scholar who tried to collect as much information and knowledge about the world around him as he could. His diary, Lijaenango (頤齋亂藁), records his general activities and scholarly works, which evolved from his practical point of view. His approach is unique when compared to those of contemporary scholars who produced philosophical ideas during the Choson Dynasty. Hwang was very absorbed in currency and mintage policy in the late Choson Dynasty, and he composed several essays on the subject. The main sources for examining his attitude towards currency and mintage are three articles that he drafted over the course of his life. These articles are about an old currency approving seal (興德縣古印說), weight trends for mintage (錢貨輕重說) and the historical institute of weights and measures in China’s Tang Dynasty (錢鈔說). These topics reflected the realities of Hwang’s life, and he worked to explore them and then suggest solutions. When Hwang found an old currency approving seal in his hometown of Heungdok City (興德縣) in his 30s, he began to collect other cases sealed in old documents. He wrote an article that compared the characteristics of the cases and explored historical records to investigate the role of the seals. Hwang’s enthusiasm led him to develop a distinctive attitude towards investigation and to take a different approach to writing articles on his research than contemporary and historical scholars. When he was 47, Hwang wrote an article that revealed his critical attitude towards currency policy, derived from practical experience. He found that poor coin quality had a negative impact on the reliability of currency, and he argued that standardised mintage in the capital and other cities could be a solution. Hwang’s last article, written when he was 63, suggested another possible solution to the problem of coin quality. He recommended reexamining the old institute of weights and measures from China’s Tang Dynasty, using it to measure old coins that he collected in the northern area of the Choson Dynasty. He determined that the Tang Dynasty’s institute was more accurate than the one in use under the Choson Dynasty, and he advocated for the adoption of the old institute for universal mintage around the country. Hwang was a distinctive scholar. He was interested in the practical matters of real life and social phenomena. His articles about currency were based on his actual investigations into old documents and his experiences.
