This study aims to analyze the contents about Christian martyrdom through theological and historical access and deal with the process that reestablishes it as an applicable principle for the contemporary situation. Although martyrdom is not unique concept within Christian community, it tries to explain a close relationship between the understanding of Christian martyrdom and the formational elements of Christian spirituality by clarifying the fact that the early church especially remembered those who were willing to embrace a forced death for the protection of their own faith and put some meaningful interpretations on such deaths. In addition to certain positive meanings on martyrdom, it attempts to accomplish a balanced theology of martyrdom which can contribute to the spiritual formation of the contemporary Christian community by focusing upon a series of historical incidents, that wrongly used with an intention, in order to prohibit any misuse of the martyrdom. While this perspective that underscores both balance and harmony does not exclude additional ideas on the topic, it also becomes the foundation of a widened goal for a horizontal expansion and the churches’ growth.

본 논문은 순교에 담긴 내용들을 신학적, 역사적 접근을 통해 분석 하고 그 의미를 오늘날에 적용 가능한 원리로 재정립하는 과정을 다루 었다. 비록 순교가 기독교 공동체에만 존재하는 고유한 개념은 아니지 만 초대교회가 신앙을 위해 강제적 죽음을 수용했던 구성원들을 특별 히 기억하고 그들의 죽음에 신학적 의미를 부여했음을 밝힘으로써 기 독교 영성의 올바른 구성요소와 순교이해 사이에 밀접한 관련이 있음 을 설명했다. 또한 이 연구는 순교의 긍정적 의미 뿐 아니라 순교를 악용할 목적으 로 의도적으로 활용된 일련의 역사적 사실들에도 주목함으로써, 오늘 날 기독교 공동체의 영성형성에 공헌할 수 있는 균형 잡힌 순교신학 정 립을 시도하였다. 조화와 균형을 강조하는 이런 관점은 추가 요소들을 배타적으로 제한하지 않는 동시에 기독교 영성의 지평 확장과 교회의 성숙 추구라는 확장된 목표달성을 위한 밑거름이 될 것으로 전망된다.
