The 1990s was a renaissance for American independent cinema. Many star directors, such as Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Kevin Smith and others burst onto the scene during this era, centering on the Sundance Film Festival. Richard Linklater was one of them. Making a brilliant and notable directorial debut, he has established a solid foothold in American independent cinema history while working with major film studios, which continues to this day. His filmography is full of cinematic interpretations and explorations of time. What is known as the ‘Before Trilogy’ (, , and ) is unique and original among various cinematic experiments regarding narrative structure and time. The story of a relationship lasting nearly 20 years follows Jesse and Celine in the series, played correspondingly by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy from their 20s into middle age. The series was completed with variations on individual moments in everyday life within the format of time passing and through the couple’s changing history during the relationship, such as meeting, separation, estrangement and meeting again. Their continuous and sophisticated conversation is Linklater’s unique strategy and methodology. Therefore, this paper studies Linklater’s background and undertones of his directorial style and the specific methodology used in the aforementioned series. Furthermore, it analyses how this simple setup about meeting, walking and talking could succeed with multi-faceted and graceful elements, focusing on the conversational scenes in the series.

1990년대는 미국 인디영화의 르네상스 시대였다. 선댄스영화제를 중심으로 쿠엔틴 타란티노, 스티븐 소더버그, 케빈 스미스 등 수많은 스타 감독들이 배출되었고 리처드 링클레이터도 그 중 한 명이다. 그 역시 돋보이는 데뷔작을 내놓으며 화려하게 등장했고 스튜디오 영화에도 안착한, 현재까지도 흥미로운 행보를 이어가고 있는 성공적인 감독이라고 할 수 있다. 그의 필모그래피는 시간에 대한 영화적 해석과 탐구로 가득 차 있다. 내러티브의 구조와 시간에 대한 다양한 실험 가운데서도 이른바 ‘비포 3부작’ 시리즈(<비포 선라이즈(1995)>, <비포 선셋(2004)>, <비포 미드나잇(2013)>)는 독보적이면서도 독창적인 시도의 영화라고 할 수 있다. ‘비포 3부작’은 20년에 걸친 인물 관계에 대한 탐구로서영화 안에서의 주인공 제시와 셀린느, 영화 밖에서는 에단 호크와 줄리 델피의 20대 청년의 모습에서 중년에 이르기까지의 과정을 담아낸 기록의 영화이기도 하다. 이 시리즈는 시간의 경과와 지속이라는 형식 안에서 개별적이고 일상적인 시간을 다양하게 변주하고, 로맨스의 운명적 변천사를 두 인물의 만남과 헤어짐을 통해 그려내고 있다. 또한 영화 속 인물들의 교양 넘치는 대화 장면은 링클레이터가 오랜 시간 구축해온 전략이자 방법론이다. 따라서 본고는 ‘비포 시리즈’를 중심으로 링클레이터 감독이 추구하는 연출 양식과 특정 방법론을 구축하게 된 배경과 의미를 다룬다. 그 중에서도 두사람이 만나서 걷고 이야기한다는 단조로운 설정을 어떻게 다층적이고 우아한 텍스트로 완성할 수있었는지 대화 장면 분석을 통해 고찰해보고자 한다.
