In this study, I attempt to analyze the contents of songs of the music textbooks used in Korean middle schools, which have been revised based on the revised curriculum of 2007. I also explore to assess the problems associated with the new contents and to provide the direction for improvement. The Japanese music sections of the textbooks contain songs, instruments (instrumentals), musical dramas, and festivals among which songs make up the largest part. 15 of 16 music textbooks deal with Japanese songs, and expecially “Sakura” appears in 11 of the textbooks. Most textbooks contain only the translated lyrics. However, the translated lyrics have obvious limitations in expressing linguistic characteristics, nuance, and meanings. Therefore, I suggest including the original language and pronunciation along with the translation. In the case of “Sakura”, two versions of translated lyrics are in use, and in some cases, the translated lyrics do not faithfully represent the original lyrics. These translations should be corrected to provide an accurate translations so that the real meanings of the lyrics are properly conveyed to the students. Most of the songs are classified as “folksongs”. However, songs, such as old songs, chang-ga, and traditional children’s songs, have been mis-classified as folksongs in the current textbooks. Therefore, I recommend that the musical genre of each song be accurately assessed and designated. Many of the songs in the textbook lack detailed background descriptions, and there are songs without explanations of the symbols on the scores. Furthermore, some textbooks provide scale theories that cannot be generalized. For the proper understanding of foreign traditional music, the backgrounds and characteristics of songs and how they should be sung must be sufficiently explained. Overall, the contents of Japanese music in the current music textbooks show clear setbacks in song selection, genre classification, lyrical translation, and musical explanation, which collectively hamper proper understanding of the characteristics of Japanese music. A solution might be sought by providing accurate information of Japanese music and by expanding the contents into non-musical Japanese culture, as well as by adding a comparative analysis to Korean music. With these efforts, students might be in a better position not only for an accurate understanding of the characteristics of Japanese music but also for acquiring an objective and balanced view of Korean music.

이 글에서는 2007년 개정 교육과정에 의해 ‘아시아 노래 부르기’를 학습 활동으로 제시하고 있 는 중학교 1학년 음악교과서를 대상으로, 악곡의 내용을 고찰하고 그 문제점을 파악하여 개선 방향 을 모색하고자 하였다. 일본음악은 악곡, 악기, 극음악, 축제에 관한 것이 수록되어 있는데, 이 중 악곡이 가장 많은 비중 을 차지하고 있다. 일본의 악곡은 16종의 음악교과서 중 15종의 교과서에 실려 있다. 악보가 수록된 곡 중 가장 높 은 빈도를 보이고 있는 것은 ‘벚꽃’으로 11종의 교과서에 실려 있고, 나머지 악곡은 각각 1종의 교 과서에 수록되어 있다. 악곡의 가사는 번역 가사만 사용한 것이 가장 많고, 그 다음이 번역가사.원어.발음을 병기한 것, 번역가사와 발음을 기재한 것 순으로 나타난다. 번역 가사만으로는 원곡이 담고 있는 언어의 특징과 의미를 제대로 파악할 수 없으므로, 번역 가사와 함께 발음, 원어를 표기하는 것이 바람직하다. ‘벚꽃’의 경우 두 종류의 가사가 사용되고 있는데, 번역 가사가 원 가사와 다르게 번역된 경우가 있다. 어떤 가사이든 원어가 담고 있는 의미가 올바르게 전달되도록 정확한 번역 가사가 제시되어 야 한다. 악곡은 대부분 ‘민요’로 표기되어 있다. 하지만 실제로 민요는 악보를 제시한 6곡 중에서 1곡뿐 이고, 제목만 제시한 악곡 7곡 중에도 민요는 1곡뿐이다. 민요로 표기된 악곡에는 고요(옛 노래), 문부성창가, 전래동요인 경우도 있으므로, 일본 노래라고 해서 모두 민요로 표기할 것이 아니라 그 음악의 장르가 무엇인지 제대로 파악하여 정확하게 표시해야 한다. 악곡 중에서는 악곡 설명이 생략된 경우도 많고, 악보에 제시된 부호의 설명이 제대로 이루어지 지 않은 곡도 있으며, 일반적이지 않은 음계이론을 제시한 경우도 있다. 다른 나라의 음악을 바르게 이해하기 위해서는 그 악곡이 어떠한 배경과 특징을 가진 것인지, 어떠한 방법으로 노래해야 하는 지에 대한 설명이 충분히 이루어져야 한다. 교과서에 수록된 일본음악의 내용은 악곡 선정이나 장르의 표기, 가사의 형태, 악곡 및 음악적 설명 등에서 취약점이 보여 일본음악의 특징을 충분히 이해하기에는 부족한 측면이 있다. 일본음악 에 관한 정확한 내용의 제시뿐 아니라 일본의 다른 문화에 대한 소개, 한국음악과의 유사점과 상이 점 등의 내용이 부가된다면 이를 통해서 일본음악의 이해뿐 아니라 나아가 한국음악을 객관적으로 이해하는데 도움이 될 것이다.
