In traditional Korean society and music culture, Vertical Flutes (Wind Instruments) without reeds, such as Danso and Tungso, played an important role. They were played not only in court music but also in folk music. Danso was selected in the Salon of Pungryu (빌流) of the late Joseon dynasty and continued the tradition of Pungryu music in Yiwangjik Aakbu during the colonial time. However, the tradition of Tungso eventually disappeared from both court music and folk music. The adoption of Danso training for elementary music courses resulted in the widespread propagation of Danso without the cultivation of professional players. This paper examines the instruction and development of Vertical Wind Instruments without reeds and suggests the creation of a new major of Vertical Flutes within the higher learning system. I begin the study by examining the need to introduce the major of Vertical Flutes without reeds. I argue that the installment of such a major can contribute to the rebirth of Korean traditional wind instruments and bring this rich tradition into contemporary music culture. I emphasize that such an attempt will be essential for the development of the music contents of Korean traditional art. Next, I review lists of potential curricula for a major of Vertical Flutes without reeds, such as instruments practices, making of instruments of Vertical Wind Instruments without reeds, improved Vertical Flutes without reeds, and the music transcription and representation of musical notes of Vertical Flutes without reeds. Creating a major of Vertical Flutes without reeds will entail a number of challenges including the employment of skilled instructors, the theoretical foundation of performance, relating to the Transverse Flutes (Wind Instruments) major, the changed perception of Vertical Flutes without Reeds, and finally relating to the secondary education system.

단소와 퉁소와 같은 무황 종취관악기는 전통 음악사회에서 매우 중요한 악기였다. 궁중음악은 물 론이고, 민간음악의 대표적인 악기로 연주되어 왔다. 종취관악기 중 단소는 조선후기 풍류방에서 채 택되어 일제강점기 이왕직아악부를 통해 풍류음악의 맥이 이어져 왔으나, 퉁소의 경우 그 발전과 역사적 변천 과정 속에서 궁중음악으로서의 기능을 상실해 버리고, 민간에서도 자취를 감춘 악기가 되었다. 단소의 경우 초등음악 교육에 활용되면서 많이 보급되었으나, 전문 음악인 양성은 크게 이 루어지지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 이러한 전통 음악사회에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 무황 종취관악기의 보급과 발전을 위해 고등 음악교육 내의 전공 개설을 생각해 보았고, 이에 대한 제반 여러 가지 문제들을 본 논문에서 검토하여 보았다. 먼저 무황 종취관악기 전공 설치의 필요성을 살펴보았는데, 전공 설치는 한국의 전통적인 관악을 회복하고 현대적인 무황 종취관악기 음악문화를 형성하며, 한국 전통음악의 문화컨텐츠 확대라는 측면에서 매우 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 고등교육 내 무황 종취관악기 전공 교육 과정 설치시 전공실기 과목 이외에도 무황 종취 관악기 제작 과목, 개량 무황 종취관악기 실기, 무황 종취관악기 악보 채보․재현 과목 등이 전공에 개설되어야 할 필요성을 살펴보았다. 그리고 무황 종취관악기 전공 개설에 나타나는 문제점으로 무황 종취관악기의 교강사 확보, 무황 종취관악기 연주 이론 정립, 횡취관악기 전공자의 비율, 무황 종취관악기에 대한 인식 전환, 중등교육과 연계 등 이 해결해야 할 문제점임을 확인하였다.
