Children’s folk songs are those that have been transmitted from the past. Interest in children’s folk songs has increased as more of them have been included in the ‘polite life’ section of the 7th National Curriculum textbooks. However, the research on children’s folk songs tends to focus on general music qualities, while overlooking the essential features of children’s folk songs. In addition, the children’s folk songs in the textbook show fixation. Therefore, this article examines the current status of children’s folk songs and determines their essential features. In addition, educational methods for teaching these features are analyzed. Finally, their educational value and status in Korean music culture are reviewed. Some essential features of folk songs are that they are sung by everyone in childhood and are remembered throughout life. They are transmitted through creative expression, imprinted with plays, and used to facilitate the process of socialization through community plays. The musical grammar learned through children’s folk songs serves as the foundation on which to enjoy other genres of Korean music and to share and communicate with one another. Music educators bear an important responsibility to teach the features of children’s folk songs the way they are. What is close to words should not be fixed to the music. Rather, students should be encouraged to enjoy it as words. Various added‐on words should be employed to allow them to feel what the genuine Korean rhythm sounds like. Everybody should be allowed to sing naturally; songs should be taught through plays; and students should be encouraged to play with lyrics. Through these processes, we allow our students to play with our musical grammar naturally.

한국어

전래동요(傳來童謠)란 ‘옛부터 전해 내려오는 아이들의 노래’를 말한다. 7차 교육과정에 의한 즐 거운 생활 교과서에 전래동요가 다수 게재되면서 전래동요에 대한 관심도 증가하였다. 그런데 전래 동요를 대상으로 하는 연구에서 전래동요의 본질적인 특성을 간과하고 예술음악의 일반적인 연구방 법론을 그대로 사용하는 경우가 발견된다. 또한 교과서의 전래동요는 고착화 현상을 보여준다. 따라서 이 글에서는 전래동요의 존재양상을 살펴 그 본질적 특성이 어디에 있는지 알아보고, 전 래동요를 전래동요답게 교육하기 위해 어떤 교육방법이 적용되어야 하는지 살펴보았다. 아울러 전 래동요의 존재양상을 통해 전래동요의 교육적 가치와 한국 음악 문화에서의 위상을 점검해 보았다. 전래동요는 말과 노래의 중간에 위치하며, 어린 시절에 누구나 부르는 것으로서 그 영향이 평생 에 걸쳐 남게 되며, 창의적 표현으로 다양하게 전승되며, 놀이와 함께 함으로써 몸으로 체득되며, 공동체 놀이를 통해 사회성을 기를 수 있는 특성이 있다. 아울러 전래동요에서 체득한 음악어법은 한국 음악의 다른 장르를 향유할 수 있는 기반이 되고, 공동체가 같은 정서를 공유하고 소통할 수 있는 토대가 되는 것이다. 이제 전래동요의 특성을 그대로 지켜서 교육해야 하는 것이 우리의 몫이다. 말과 가까운 것을 굳 이 노래로 고착화시키지 말아야 하며 오히려 말처럼 즐기도록 도와야 한다. 다양한 말 붙임새를 활 용하여 진정한 한국의 리듬이 어떤 것인지 느끼도록 해야 한다. 누구나 부담 없는 자연스런 발성으 로 노래하고, 놀이를 통해 몸으로 익히고, 가사를 마음대로 바꾸어 부를 수 있어야 한다. 그 과정에 서 우리의 음악 어법을 자연스럽게 가지고 놀 수 있도록 해야 하는 것이다.
