Recently, people have demonstrated a preference for various funeral methods beyond the classical types such as internment, cremation, and the use of urns after cremation. Thus, the purpose of this article is to grasp the meaning and recognition of death and the cultural interpretation of changing funeral methods to derive recommendations for Korea. This study investigates the transition of the German funeral culture from the ancient period through the Middle Ages to the modern era before and after the country’s unification. After reviewing the transition to more recently preferred funeral methods, this research examines the legal system and conditions regarding anonymous burial, forest burial, common burial, and the scattering of ashes. Next, the cultural meaning of postmodern funeral culture is examined, which is represented as pluralism, individualism, and diversity with preferences expanding to include natural or alternative burials. Therefore, it is pointed out that this postmodern culture lacks communication and sympathy between the living and dead in the socio-cultural dimension. On the other hand, from an institutional point of view, funeral laws restrict the desires of diverse citizens in postmodern society. According to the transition to a culture that prefers cremation in Korea, this study proposes a nature-friendly funeral culture and the establishment of a proper awareness of death by referring to the case of western Germany.

고전적인 토장, 화장, 화장 후 납골의 장법에서 최근 다양화된 장법 선호가 늘어나고 있다. 이 글은 서구 포스트 근대 독일 사회의 장법 변화와 내용에 대한 문화적 해석과 함께 죽음의 의미와 인식을 파악해 봄으로써 한국에 시사하는 함의를 도출해 보고자 함이 목적이다. 본론에서 독일 장법문화의 변천을 고대와 중세부터 근대, 동서독 분단 시기, 통일 이후까지 시계열적으로 고찰한다. 장법 선호도 변화를 간략하게 살펴본 다음 1970년대 이후 포스트 근대 사회의 독일 장법 유형으로 나타나는 익명의 매장, 수목장림, 공동매장, 수장, 산골 등의 매장방식과 법제 및 실태를 조사한다. 이어서 전근대, 근대, 포스트 근대 시기별 장법 문화가 지닌 특징을 구분해 보고, 이러한 포스트 근대 사회의 장법 문화에 대한 문화적 의미를 분석한다. 그리하여 이러한 장법문화가 가지는 문제점으로 사회문화적 차원에서 산자와 죽은 자의 소통, 공감의 결핍 문제, 그리고 제도적 관점에서 포스트 근대사회의 다변화, 다양화된 시민의 욕구를 제약하는 법규제 등을 지적하였다. 한국의 장법이 화장 문화로 변함에 따라 서구 독일 사례를 참고하여 이른바 자연장에 대한 이해 및 법제의 정립 등을 통해 자연친화적 장법의 정착 및 죽음에 대한 바른 인식을 가질 것을 제안해 본다.
