Pierre-Auguste Renoir is remembered as a leading Impressionist painter. Taking a closer look at Renoir’s world of art, we could know that to overcome the limitations of his impressionistic art, he explored and searched for alternatives thoroughly. This study aimed at representing, after his years of consideration, how his impressionistic style and technique changed, what the characteristics of his time-periodic paintings are, and how he developed his peculiar aesthetic form by surpassing the limitations. Moreover, we particularly focused on the new interpretation: unlike general interpretation, Renoir spent most of his life not escaping, but ‘upgrading’ his Impressionistic painting style. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, several trips to Italy inspired Renoir to try to be more true to sense of volume - drawbacks of the Impressionistic systematic technique. Secondly, the use of the vibrant colors, which is his late painting’s characteristic, is his pursuing Impressionistic colors consistently. Thirdly, harmony of the Impressionistic colors and classical contour led Renoir to create art in his personal styles. In conclusion, the purpose of this study lies in exploring Renoir’s own painting art world by newly considering the superficial interpretation that Renoir felt the Impressionism as the danger he had to escape from.

본 연구는 인상파의 대가 P.르누아르의 인상파적 작품이 평가가 많이 되어 인상파 화가로 알려져 있지만 그의 예술세계를 깊이 살펴보면 인상파 회화의 한계를 극복하기위해 탐구와 모색의 시기를 개척하는데, 이 후 시기들이 갖는 의미에서 르누아르의 화풍이 어떻게 변화하는지, 또한 시기별 작품의 특징은 어떠한지를 살펴보고 각 시기별 화풍의 특징을 통해 르누아르는 어떻게 인상파의 한계를 극복하여 독자적인 회화세계 를 창조하였는지에 대하여 고찰하였다. 또한 본 연구에서 주목하는 바는 일반적인 해석과 달리 초기 르누 아르의 인상파 탐구의 시기와 그 이후 지향했던 인상파 극복의 시기를 르누아르가 인상파를 직시하면서도 그 한계를 극복하고자 했다는 점으로 새롭게 해석하였다. 이 점을 중심으로 선행연구들을 통하여 이론적 배경으로 르누아르의 생애와 작품의 특징을 살펴보고, 르누아르 작품의 연대기적 분석에 따른 조형적 특징 을 조금 더 구체적으로 살펴보며 주제와 형식의 관계를 분석해 나아가는 방향으로 연구가 진행되었다. 본 논문의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 르누아르가 이탈리아 방문을 통해 깊은 감명을 받고 양감의 형태에 충 실하고자 한 결과로 기존 인상파회화가 지닌 양감의 부재를 극복하려했다. 둘째, 후반기의 그는 색채를 밝 고 화려하게 쓰는 것이 특징인데 이것은 인상파의 색채를 구현함으로써 가능할 수 있었다. 셋째, 인상파적 인 색채와 고전적인 형태감의 조화로 기존 인상주의 화가들과 차별화된 르누아르만의 독창적인 예술세계 를 확인할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 르누아르가 인상주의를 도피해야할 위험으로 느꼈다는 기존의 르누아르 작품의 피상적 해석을 다시금 새롭게 정리함으로써 르누아르만의 인상파적 회화세계를 확인할 수 있었다는 점에서 본 연구의 의미를 찾고자 한다.
