The objective of this study is to provide an opportunity of extending an external boundary of Sijo research of Shim, Hoon by generally observing cognition for Shim, Hoon's Sijo. Researches on Shim, Hoon so far have been generally concentrated on film and novel and preceding study that mainly discussed Shim, Hoon Sijo has following problem. Formal completeness of Shim, Hoon Sijo was evaluated based on a currently prevailing perspective. Range of Shim, Hoon Sijo becomes unclear if its form should be evaluated based on a current perspective, not that of Shim, Hoon. In addition, it is hard to readily accept the fact that Sijo was selected in order to avoid censorship under colonial rule because it is required to be analyzed in contents, rhetorical aspect, not an issue of Sijo form. Sijo form of which topic handles Gangho Hanjeong is same as that of other Sijo that handles other contents. Sijo form does not cover detouring nature but it has discriminating point in contents and its solving mode. In addition, in newspapers and magazines during blooming period when Japanese imperialist started to expose an ambition of dominating Daehan Jegook, numerous Sijo works having contents of defying Japanese rule were published. In this study, unsatisfactory part of above mentioned preceding study is intended to be supplemented. For this objective, following contents are intended to be developed based on a text exposing cognition for Shim, Hoon Sijo. First, when Shim, Hoon started to recognize Sijo will be reviewed. A There must have been a clear opportunity for Shim, Hoon in his effort of being able to create Sijo and while observing his growing process, its solution would be explored. As a next step, formal characteristics of Shim, Hoon Sijo will be observed. And what type of Sijo form Shim, Hoon kept in mind and what works of Shim, Hoon among his numerous works could be summarized as acceptable one will be observed. And characteristics of contents of Shim Hoon Sijo will be reviewed as well. If a work of observing on what contents were intended to be contained in creating Sijo by Shim, Hoon should be added, an opportunity of being able to identify general features of Shim, Hoon Sijo would be provided.

본고의 목표는 심훈의 시조에 대한 인식을 개괄적으로 살펴봄으로써 심훈 시조 연구의 외연을 확장하는 계기를 마련하는 데 있다. 심훈에 대한 그간의 연구는 영화 및 소설에 집중한 경향이 있다. 그러나 심훈 시조를 중심으로 논의를 한 선행연구는 다음과 같은 문제점을 지니고 있다. 우선 심훈 시조의 형식적인 완성도를 현재 통용되고 있는 관점으로 평가했다는 점이다. 심훈의 관점이 아니라 현재의 관점으로 형식을 평가한다면, 심훈 시조의 범위가 불분명해진다. 또한 식민지 시기 검열을 피하기 위해 시조를 택했다는 점 또한 선뜻 수긍하기가 어렵다. 이것은 시조 형식의 문제가 아니라 내용적인 측면 및 수사적인 측면에서 분석해야 하기 때문이다. 강호한정을 주제로 하는 시조도 형식 자체는 다른 내용을 다루고 있는 여타의 시조와 동일하다. 시조 형식이 우회성을 담보하는 것이 아니라, 내용 및 내용을 풀어나가는 방식에 있어서 변별점을 갖는 것이다. 또한 일제가 대한제국 지배의 야욕을 드러내기 시작한 개화기의 신문과 잡지에는 일제에 항거하는 내용을 담은 수많은 시조 작품이 산출되었다. 본고에서는 위에서 언급한 선행연구의 미진한 부분을 보충하려 한다. 이를 위해서 심훈의 시조에 대한 인식이 드러나 있는 텍스트를 중심으로 다음과 같은 내용을 전개하고자 한다. 우선, 심훈이 언제부터 시조를 인식하기 시작했는지부터 검토할 것이다. 심훈이 시조를 창작할 수 있었던 데는 분명한 계기가 있었을 것이다. 이는 심훈의 성장 과정을 살펴보면서 해답의 실마리를 찾아볼 것이다. 다음으로는 심훈 시조의 형식적 특징에 대해 살펴볼 것이다. 심훈이 생각했던 시조의 형식은 무엇이었는지, 그리고 이를 통해서 심훈의 다수의 시 작품 중에서 이에 부합하는 작품은 어떠한 것으로 정리할 수 있는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 다음으로는 심훈 시조의 내용적 특징에 대해 검토할 것이다. 심훈이 시조를 창작함에 있어서 어떤 내용을 담아내고자 했는지에 대해 살펴보는 작업까지 더해진다면, 심훈 시조에 대한 개괄적인 특성을 짚어내는 계기가 마련될 수 있으리라 본다.
