This study is to understand the necessity of modern dance by understanding the current status of musical dance education and also analyzing works. Researching the college musical-related departments in the whole nation, and understanding the frequency of modern dance shown in four foreign creative musicals and four Korean creative musicals premiered in 2016, the choreographic trend of Korean musical was examined. In the results, in the current college musical curriculum, only one place had the modern dance course. In foreign musicals and Korean creative musicals, the frequency of using modern dance was more than popular dance. Through this research method, the necessity of modern dance to the department of musical was verified, and the reasons are like below. First, modern dance can express the dramatic situations with physical performance through movements. Second, modern dance can express the image of free imagination with body. Third, choreography using modern dance can maximize the dramatic effects and extend the meaning. Fourth, modern dance can make functional/creative movements through the combination with other genres. Fifth, the essence of movement and body can be perceived through modern dance. Therefore, the continuous education including training in curriculum and collaboration with other genres implies the possibility of development of Korean creative musical choreography.

본 연구는 뮤지컬 무용교육현황과 작품분석을 통해 현대무용의 필요성을 알아보기 위해 뮤지컬관련학과를 조사하고 외국뮤지컬 4편과 한국창작뮤지컬 4편에 나오는 현대무용의 빈도, 한국뮤지컬의 안무동향을 살펴보았다. 그결과 현재 대학 뮤지컬교육과정에서 단 한 곳만이 현대무용 수업을 하는 것으로 나타났고 국내외뮤지컬에서 현대무용의 사용빈도가 대중무용보다 많음을 알 수 있었다. 이를 통하여 현대무용이 대학 뮤지컬학과에 필요한 교과목임을 확인하였으며 그 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 움직임을 통해 극의 상황을 신체연기로 표현할 수 있다. 둘째, 자유로운 상상의 이미지를 신체로 표현할 수 있다. 셋째, 현대무용을 이용한 안무는 극적 효과를 극대화 시키고 의미를 확장시킬 수 있다. 넷째, 다른 장르의 무용과 결합하여 기능적ㆍ창조적인 움직임을 만들어 낼 수 있다. 다섯째, 현대무용을 통하여 움직임의 본질과 신체를 인식할 수 있다. 그러므로 현대무용을 교육과정 속에서 훈련하고 지속적인 교육을 하는 것이 한국창작뮤지컬의 안무가 한층 더 발전될 수 있다는 가능성을 시사하고 있다.
