Primary needs and backgrounds of this inquiry are to strengthen national security through the promotion of defense science and technology as well as know-how that are necessary for the future warfare. In order to meet the military requirements in the changing security environment and warfare paradigms, it attempts to analyze the operational concepts of future warfares based on the defense science and technology including its trend analysis. Focused on the development trends of weapon systems, military advanced countries have continued the revolution in military affairs and reorganized their force structures. Particularly, they invested in the fields of space-related technology, robotics, information and communication networks, nano-technology, and organic bio-technology. This paper sets up the basic concepts of weapons systems necessary for the future warfares by looking at the development and classification trends of them. It contends that an establishment of the effective system of systems is essential through the revolution in military affairs to meet the needs of future warfares. In conclusion, it stresses the necessity of ensuring R&D budgets and civil-military technology cooperation to catch-up the military advanced countries.

본 연구의 필요성과 배경에는 축적된 국방과학기술 역량과 노하우를 활용하여 미래전장에 요구되는 무기체계 개발소요를 제기하고 군이 요구하는 성능을 구비한 무기체계를 개발 및 편제하여 궁극적으로는 국가안보의 강화에 기여하는데 있다. 또한 한반도 안보환경의 변화, 전쟁양상 및 패러다임의 변화, 과학기술의 발달 추세 등을 분석하여 미래 과학기술 기반의 전장 운영개념을 도출하고 무기체계 개발소요를 발굴하고자 한다. 무기체계 발전추세를 보면 군사선진국은 미래의 전쟁수행에 부합되도록 군사혁신을 계속하면서 국방과학기술 발전을 도모하는 한편, 군 전력구조 개편을 대대적으로 추진하고 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 특히 군사선진국은 우주분야 기술과 로봇, 정보통신네트워크, 나노분야. 생명바이오 분야의 무기체계에 대해 집중적인 투자를 하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 그동안 체계적인 연구가 미흡했던 무기체계 분류에 따른 발전추세를 살펴보고 미래전에 대비하여 요구되는 무기체계의 기본적인 개념을 도출한다. 또한 시스템 복합체제 기반의 첨단 무기체계에 대한 분류체계를 고찰하여 미래의 방향과 과제에 대해 논의하고 국가안보 확립을 위한 군사혁신의 대안을 제시한다. 결론에서 미래전에 대비하기 위해서는 과학기술의 발달에 기초한 전장 운영개념을 연구하여 전쟁양상의 변화에 효과적으로 대응할 수 있는 무기체계가 개발되어야 한다는 점을 강조한다. 특히 미래전 수행하는데 필요한 무기체계를 개발하는데 가장 핵심적인 사안 중의 하나는 연구개발비의 확보라는 부분과 군사선진국의 기술력을 하루바삐 따라잡기 위해서는 민군기술협력을 활성화해야 한다는 점을 제기한다.
