This paper examines how Kim Sooyoung has been influenced by Yeats and his work, and makes an attempt to identify the traces of his influence on Kim’s poetry. The April 19 Uprising of Korea has made Kim Sooyoung realize the reality of life in Korea at that time, and he searches for new methods of writing poetry. Kim comes to be interested in the literary characteristics of Yeats, which is to influence his outlook. Kim Sooyoung has looked for the direction of ‘modernity’ that Korean poetry should take. On the basis of Yeats’s examples, Kim, being keenly aware of the issues of Korean poetry, develops his own style. In “The Great Root,” Kim Sooyoung is newly aware of his poetic tradition by reading and learning the poetry of Yeats, who had been deeply concerned with Irish tradition.

이 논문은 김수영의 예이츠 문학 수용 양상을 살피고, 그것이 그의 시 세계에 미친 영향을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 4. 19 혁명을 계기로 김수영은 한국 의 시대 현실에 대한 냉철한 인식 아래 새로운 시 쓰기 방법론에 고심(苦心)하는데, 이러한 시적(詩的) 모색은 이 시기 그가 주시했던 예이츠 문학의 특징과 긴밀하게 연 동된다. 김수영은 시대 현실에 대한 예이츠의 인식과 이를 기저로 한 창작 방법론을 매개로 한국 시단의 문제점을 인식하면서, 한국시가 나가야 할 ‘현대성’의 방향을 타 진하였다. 巨大한 뿌리 에서 김수영은 아일랜드 전통에 지대한 관심을 보였던 예이츠 의 시적 특징을 창조적으로 수용하여 전통에 대한 새로운 인식을 마련하였다.
