‘Orientalism’ can be seen as the essence of a Western style of thought based upon the distinction between ‘the Orient’ and ‘the Occident’ and a Western stance of domination over ‘the Orient.’ In this we can see a dichotomy between ‘the backward Orient’ and ‘the developed Occident’ that leads to the conclusion that ‘the Orient’ is to be guided by ‘the Occident.’ This is the ideological rationale for Colonialism and Imperialism in the spirit of Modernization. In global opposition to this, in the 1970s, there emerged a number of cultural and political movements based on indigenous cultures involving such common concepts as ‘interconnectedness（相互関係性)’, ‘coexistence（共生、 相生)’, ‘priority of otherness’, and ‘non-violence’, that are generally connected with religions. In developments of this kind lies a real possibility for peace-building in the contemporary world.

‘오리엔탈리즘’의 본질은, 에드워드 사이드에 의하면, “오리엔트에 대한 서양의 사고 양식”이자 “서양의 지배양식”이다. 거기에는 “뒤쳐진 오리엔트”와 “진보발 전한 서양”이라는 ‘이항대립’이 존재하고, 전자는 후자의 식민지주의·제국주의라 는 지도와 원조를 받아서 ‘근대화’할 수 있다는 이데올로기가 존재하고 있다. 이 와 같은 ‘근대화’에 대항하는 운동은 1970년대에 세계적 규모가 되어 나타난다. 그것들은 지역의 토착문화를 상황화함으로써 오리엔탈리즘과는 다른 근대화를 제기하는 것이다. 거기에는 공통적으로 상호관계성·상호의존성, 공생(상생), 연대, 타자의 우선성, 비폭력이 보이고 있다. 이 개념들은 지역의 종교와 밀접하게 결부된 것이다. 본 논문에서는 오리엔탈리즘에 대항하는 토착적 근대의 내용을 밝힘과 동시에 그 구체적인 예를 저자의 실천을 통해서 소개하고자 한다.
