This study aims to present some methodological principles of standardization on the premise that there is a necessity of international baduk terminology. As the universal language, English, independent from the three powerful languages in baduk society, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, and also already having lots of baduk terms of itself being used internationally, is suggested. The most important condition of making English as the standard language of international baduk terminology is to let the people speaking in other languages be able to maintain language independency as much as possible by means of minimizing the number of standard English baduk terms. English, spoken everywhere, is still much more foreign for non-English speakers than their mother tongue, so that using a lot of English terms can be a quite big obstacle in promoting baduk in their countries. It is almost impossible to change a language by artificial means. Even if the international baduk terminology is successfully standardized, it cannot be assured that it would be willingly accepted and fully used by the people. Standardization is a suggestion at most. The rest is up to the will of people to agree and change their languages. To be successful in persuading the people, the international baduk terminology should be easy to learn and use, and logical and helpful to understand and explain baduk. It is wished that this paper can be a excitement of the same kind discussions among the people from the three powerful countries, Korea, China, Japan, and also the native English speakers.

본 논문은 국제바둑용어가 정립되어야 한다는 전제를 가지고 방법상의 몇 가지 원칙을 제시 하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 국제바둑용어의 언어로서는 한·중·일 삼국으로부터 독립적이고 국 제공용어로서의 지위가 확고할 뿐만 아니라 기존에 통용되고 있는 바둑용어도 상당수 가지고 있는 영어를 사용할 것을 제안하였다. 대신 가급적 바둑용어의 수를 줄여 각국이 자국어를 그 대로 사용할 수 있는 여지를 충분히 마련해 두어야 한다. 영어가 국제공용어라고 하더라도 자 국어에 비해 쓰기 불편한 것은 사실이고, 따라서 바둑을 보급하는 데 있어서도 영어로 된 바둑 용어의 수가 많은 것은 장애가 될 것이기 때문이다. 언어라는 것은 인위적으로 바꾸는 것이 거 의 불가능하다. 국제바둑용어를 정립한다고 하여도 그것은 언중에게 하나의 안을 제시하는 것 일 뿐, 그 용어들이 실제로 쓰일 것이라고는 확신할 수 없다. 언중이 스스로 수용하고 바꾸려는 의지를 보여주어야 하는 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 그 언어를 사용하는 것이 쉽고 편하고 논리 적이고 바둑을 이해하는 데 도움이 되어야 한다. 바둑규칙과 마찬가지로 국제바둑용어 역시 사 용자를 최우선으로 고려하여 정립되어야 하는 것이다. 그러한 목표 하에 한·중·일 삼국과 영어 를 모국어로 사용하는 나라들, 그리고 그 밖의 여러 나라 간의 국제바둑용어에 관한 실질적인 논의가 많이 이루어지기를, 그러한 논의에 이 논문이 작으나마 도움이 되기를 기대해 본다.
