This paper has attempted to analyze Liu Xie’s theory of literary creation with the Shensi as its center. First, Shensi is a combination of two different concepts of Shen and Si, which function as intuitive perception and reasonable thinking respectively. Second, the three primary factors of the literary writing, Shensi, Yixiang, and a literary work are the result of the integration between the two opposing elements. Through building this successive dialectic structure, Liu Xie intended to establish a comprehensive, stable, and neutral structure of his theory. Third, Shensi should be distinguished from the imagination: the range of the operations of Shensi is much wider than that of the imagination is; the interaction between subject and object is direct in the operation of Shensi whereas the imagination contact an object indirectly; the structure and relationship with other mental and physical factors of Shensi is so complicated that the concept of imagination cannot reflect its specificity and complexity.

‘神思’는 문학적 글쓰기를 주관하는 핵심적 정신 활동으로서 《文心雕龍》의 창작론을 견인하는 역할을 담당한다. 현대의 많은 주석가, 연구자들은 이를 ‘상상력(imagination)’으로 이해, 번역해왔으나, 본고에서는 그 정당성에 의문을 제기하고 神思의 독자적인 성질과 기능을 밝히는 것을 목적한다. 우선, 神과 思는 각기 객체의 인식과 글쓰기를 위한 사고 작용 전반을 담당하며 이들은 직관과 논리라는 상반된 내적 원리를 기반으로 작용한다. 나아가 神思의 작용에 의해 형성되는 ‘意象’은 글쓰기 주체의 감정 및 지향과 객체의 형상이 심중에서 결합된 것이며, 이 意象은 다시 聲律과 더불어 실제 체현된 문장의 내용과 형식의 양면을 이룬다. 劉勰이 주장하는 문학적 글쓰기의 과정은 이러한 상이한 성질을 지닌 요소들의 연속적 결합 위에 조직화되어 있으며, 劉勰은 이러한 긴밀한 조직화로써 본인의 창작 이론에 통합성과 안정성을, 그리고 나아가 문학적 글쓰기 행위 자체에 완결성을 부여한다. 이에 반해, ‘상상력(imagination)’의 의미망은 본질적으로 유동적이어서 단일한 의미로 수렴되지 않으나, 칸트, 콜리지, 바슐라르의 상상력은 주체적으로 형상을 재구축, 나아가 창조해낸다는 점에서 일견 神思와 유사한 방식으로 작용한다. 그러나 神思가 객체의 인식으로부터 구상, 실제 문장으로의 체현까지 문학적 글쓰기 과정 전반을 담당하는 정신활동임에 반해 상상력은 지각 및 이성과 구분되며, 따라서 그 본질적 기능 역시 양자 사이에서 제한된다. 또한, 神이 외물에 작용함에 있어 그 공간적 경계를 무화함에 반해 상상력은 외물에 직접적으로 작용하지 않는다. 마지막으로 神思의 연속적이며 다층적인 결합 구조 및 志, 氣, 才, 力 등 요소들과의 복합적 관계를 고려할 때, 神思와 상상력의 의미 범주에는 상당한 차이가 있다.
