The purpose of this paper is to confirm how traditional legends are changing and existing in modern times, and how they are inheriting and developing legendary values and meanings. The subject of the study is uncanny stories concerning army that is judged to be worthwhile alongside uncanny stories concerning school. The uncanny stories concerning army are urban legends that are active in the internet. It can be defined as 'a narrative story that raises fear with supernatural and strange experiences in the army'. In addition to the internet community sites, humor sites and game sites are actively handed down. Recently, ghost stories have appeared on the site, and uncanny stories concerning army are easily collected from these various sites. The uncanny stories concerning army can be divided into three types: ghost experience type, Bulgogi GP type, mystery radio type. The ghost experience type has the largest number of version, the contents are rich and varied. It does not deviate much from the traditional notion of ghosts. Bulgogi GP type has a frenzied horror from its name. It is related to actual events and raises horror. Mystery radio type is a romantic material used in movies and dramas. However, unlike movies and dramas, uncanny stories concerning army are perceived as fearsome. The uncanny stories concerning army continues to emphasize that the story is actually experienced in the title and content. It has presented concrete evidence. The emphasis on truthfulness is intended to make fear more realistic. This comes from the desire for safety. Uncanny stories concerning army focus on horror. So It tries to reveal the history and truthfulness of the story itself. As a result, the history of reality, the truth of reality, and the realistic ideology are erased. 이 논문은 전통적인 전설이 현대에 어떻게 변화하고 존재하면서 전설로서의 가치와 의미를 계승·발전시켜 나가고 있는가 하는 것을 확인해보려는 의도에서 시작되었다. 연구 대상은 현대의 전설 중 학교괴담과 나란히 가치가 있다고 판단되는 군대괴담을 대상으로 하였다. 군대괴담은 인터넷을 중심으로 전승이 활발한 현대 도시전설로서 ‘군대에서의 초자연적이고 기이한 경험을 소재로 하되 공포감을 불러일으키는 서사적 이야기’라고 정의할 수 있다. 커뮤니티 외에도 유머 사이트, 게임 사이트에서 활발히 전승되고 있으며, 최근에는 괴담 전문 사이트까지 등장하였다. 이처럼 이런 다양한 사이트들에서 활발한 전승을 보이고 있는 군대괴담은 ‘귀신 체험형’, ‘불고기 GP형’, ‘괴무전형’의 세 가지 유형으로 나눌 수 있었다. 가장 많은 각편을 보유하고 있으며 내용도 풍부하고 다양한 ‘귀신 체험형’은 귀신에 대한 전통적 관념에서 크게 벗어나지 않는다. 이름에서부터 엽기적 공포감을 불러일으키는 ‘불고기 GP형’은 실제 사건과 관련을 가지며 공포감을 더욱 고조시키고 있고, ‘괴무전형’은 영화나 드라마에서 낭만적으로 많이 활용된 소재임에도 군대괴담에서는 공포스럽게 인식되고 있다는 점에서 차이를 보인다. 군대괴담은 제목과 내용에서부터 그 이야기가 실제로 경험한 것이라는 점을 지속적으로 강조하면서 구체적인 근거들을 제시하고 있다. 진실성의 강조는 공포심을 현실화하려는 의도이며 이는 안전에 대한 욕망에서 기인하는 것이다. 이처럼 군대괴담은 공포에 초점을 맞추면서 이야기 속 사건 자체의 역사성과 진실성을 밝히려는 노력을 하게 되고 그러면서 현실의 역사, 현실적 상황이 처한 진실, 현실적 이념은 소거되는 한계를 노정하고 있다. 전통적인 전설이 지녔던 역사성과 진실성이 군대괴담의 경우에는 다른 방식으로 변주되고 있는 것이다.
