The aim of this paper is to argue that the essential structure of human life is to live together. To achieve this aim, I utilize Aristotle’s explanation of friendship and pleasure in the The Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle takes great pains to emphasize that the perception of our existence is pleasant, and he attributes the pleasantness of this perception to the fact that it reveals life as good and oneself as having this good. Thus perceiving that one lives is a way of enjoying or appreciating one’s life as good. The perception that one lives is different from the intellectual act of reflecting on one’s goals and objectives. Because there is an affective dimension to the perception that should not be neglected or trivialized. According to Aristotle, friends critically contribute to making this affective experience possible. Friends illuminate the good in each other’s lives through joint perception. thereby sustaining the possibility of the enjoyment that reveals life as a whole to be good. In other words, friends need each other to feel alive. Joint perception refers to the way friends feel the life or existence of each other as good, meaningful, and desirable. Joint perception requires an intimate acquaintance with each other’s lives. This acquaintance consists in knowledge of the character, history, and trajectory of a life, as well as sympathetic understanding of how that life has been experienced. Therefore joint perception presupposes living together. If we, qua humans, must live together with friends and living together is an activity that saturates our lives, then it is reasonable to conclude that human living essentially is living together. I claim that this is exactly what Aristotle means by his foundational claim that humans are social by nature.
