The purpose of the present study is to investigate the knowledge structure of the American art therapy field through co-word analysis, identifying the major research areas of art therapy in the United States. To this end, 1,107 keywords were extracted from 681 articles in ｢Art Therapy｣ published by American Art Therapy Association(AATA), from its first issue to Volume 34, Issue 1 (Years 1983~2017). After 213 words appearing 3 or more times were further selected, a similarity coefficient matrix was obtained based on the frequency of each word and the co-occurrence frequency across the literature, and this matrix was visualized. Results indicate that the knowledge structure of art therapy in the United States consists of three main interconnected areas: research focusing on knowledge regarding the clinical application of art therapy, research focusing on the diverse cultural background of the clients, and research focusing on the treatment and diagnostic utility of art. A more detailed analysis identified research clusters distributed around 41 topics. These results are significant in that they objectively reveal the knowledge structure of the American art therapy field through methods of analysis from library and information science. The suggestion for future research is discussed by comparing it with the intellectual structure of korean art therapy.

본 연구는 동시출현단어 분석을 통하여 미국에서 수행된 미술치료연구의 지적구조를 규명함으로써 미국 미술치료학의 주요 연구영역과 그 세부내용을 식별하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여, 미국미술치료협회(American Art Therapy Association; AATA)에서 출판하는 ｢Art Therapy｣의 첫 호부터 34권 1호(1983년~2017년)까지에 게재된 681편의 논문을 대상으로 주요어휘 1,107개를 추출하였으며 그 중 출현빈도가 3회 이상인 213개의 단어를 추린 다음, 각 어휘의 출현빈도와 문헌 간 동시출현빈도를 바탕으로 유사도 계수행렬을 구하고 이를 시각화하였다. 그 결과, 미국 미술치료학의 지적구조는 미술치료의 임상적 실천에 관한 지식을 중심으로 한 연구영역과 내담자의 다양한 문화적 배경을 중심으로 한 연구영역 및 미술의 치료와 진단적 유용성을 중심으로 한 연구영역이 각기 연결된 것으로 나타났으며 세부적으로 41가지 주제에 대한 연구군집이 분포된 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 문헌정보학적 분석기법을 통하여 미국 미술치료 분야의 지식체계 를 객관적으로 도출하였다는 데에 의의가 있으며 이를 국내 미술치료학의 지적구조와 비교함으로써 향후 연구를 위한 제언을 논의하였다.
