The majority of research on inmates’ adjustment in prison condition continuously reports the importance of relationships between inmates and correctional officers. A growing body of current studies focused on this relationship not only based on traditional theoretical backgrounds but also refer to new theorematical approaches of correctional officers legitimacy. Yet, the majority of current Korean corrections studies still ignores in studying this relationship topics. Further, there are still lack of studies involves in conducting qualitative studies investigating inmates adjustment and attitudes towards correctional officers in Korea. To fulfill the knowledge gap, this current study sought to provide a quantitative analysis of inmates perceptions towards correctional officers in order to understand inmates adjustment in prison and partly to examine relationship between correctional officers and inmates. Further it investigates the factors influence inmates attitudes and perceptions to codirectional officers. The study used a set of survey data of male inmates collected from prisons and jails nationwide (n=219 male inmates). Using multivariate regression analyses, this study found that factors influencing inmates perceptions include social network, stress, and household income, which are congruent outcomes to the prior studies from other countries. Conclusions, limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are provided in result and discussion.

최근의 연구들은 수용자들과 교도관들의 관계는 교도소 내의 성공적인 적응은 수용자들의 일탈행위를 억제하고 성공적인 교화를 이끌어 내는 데 매우 중요한 요인으로 지목하고 있다. 특히 수용자들의 교도관들에 대한 태도와 인식이 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려지고 있다. 이와 같은 연구의 필요에 따라, 이 연구는 남성수용자들의 교정직원에 대한 태도 및 인식을 이해하고 및 이에 영향을 미치는 요인들에 대해 경험적으로 검증하고자 한다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 전국의 12개 교도소 등에 수용된 남성수용자 219명을 표집할당하여 수행한 설문조사결과를 회귀분석하였다. 연구에 포함된 변수들은 수용자들의 교도소 적응과 관련된 이론적 배경과 교도관들의 합법성과 관련된 최근의 선행연구들을 통해 선별되었다. 분석결과 남성수용자들의 교도관들에 대한 평균적인 태도는 부정적이기 보다 긍정적인 경향을 나타내는 것으로 이해되었다. 또한 교도관들에 대한 부정적인 인식과 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인들이 긍정적인 인식과 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인들과 서로 유사하다는 것을 발견하였다. 보다 구체적인 연구의 결과와 국외연구와의 비교 및 정책적 함의, 그리고 연구의 제한점 등에 대해서는 결론 및 논의에서 논의되었다.
