The purpose of this study is to examine the prisoners’ restoring relationships with their victims, which lead to released prisoners’ successful reintegration in to society. As the concept of restoring broken relationships with others is the major factor of restorative justice, the current study focuses on restorative correction. The backgrounds of how restorative justice is introduced into correctional setting, specific programs of restorative corrections, effectiveness and positive impacts of restorative correction programs, and barriers to successful restorative justice programs in correctional setting are examined. Reaching the conclusion that restorative correction programs are an effective way to restore inmates’ relationships with others and society, this study provides policy implications. In other to enhance the effectiveness of restorative correction programs, establishing partnership with non-profit private organizations, implementing victim awareness programs in prisons, developing restorative correctional programs aimed at successful prisoner reintegration into society, enhancing awareness of restorative corrections among criminal justice system personnel and introducing accountability enhancement programs for prisoners are presented.

본 연구는 수형자의 관계성 회복을 수형자의 교정교화와 사회복귀의 중요한 요인으로 주목하였으며, 특히 범죄행위로 인해 발생한 피해자-가해자 관계회복에 초점을 맞추고 회복적 사법이 교정시설에 적용된 회복적 교정을 검토하였다. 회복적 사법이 교정에 도입되게 된 배경과 국/내외 적으로 운영되고 있는 프로그램들, 회복적 교정의 장점과 효과성, 회복적 교정이 해결해야할 문제점들을 검토하였다. 회복적 교정 프로그램들을 통해 피해자는 물론 수형자를 둘러싼 여러 관계성을 회복함으로써, 회복적 교정은 교정교화와 성공적 사회복귀라는 새로운 교정 패러다임을 구현할 수 있는 가능성이 있는 전략이라는 결론에 도달하였다. 이미 부분적으로 시도되었던 회복적 교정이 향후 우리나라 교정에서 확대·시행되기 위한 정책적 방안으로, ‘피해자 인식 및 공감 프로그램’의 시행, 민관의 협력체계 구축, 전문적 프로그램의 개발, 회복적 교정에 대한 인식강화, 책임감을 강화하는 프로그램 연계 등을 제시하였다.
