This research surveyed the representation of Korean music in textbooks used in Japanesemiddle schools. For this purpose, textbooks by major publishers of educational materialssuch as the widely used Jugakseino Ongaku (“Music for middle school students”, 中學生の音樂) by Kyōiku-geijutsu sha (敎育藝術社) and Ongakuno Okurimono (“Gift of Music”,音樂のおくりもの) by Kyoiku-shuppan (敎育出版) were selected for review. Among these textbooks, the topic of Korean music was included only in the textbookfor first graders [middle school freshmen] where the contents of “Arirang”, “Gayageum”,and “Seoljanggu” were discussed. Regretfully, not much on the diversity of Koreaninstruments and traditional genres were found in any of these books. Moreover, the lackof notations depicting the special features of Korean music and detailed explanations ofthe pieces as well as misleading pictures all drew major concerns. The biggest issue whichwill need to be addressed is that the textbook improperly identifies the country as “JoseonBando” rather than the official name “South Korea” or “Republic of Korea”. However,the interpretation of “Arirang” as a foreign song was very well done; the original Koreanlyrics were recorded and shown with a comprehensive translation of its significance aswell as a phonetic transcription in the native language. Moving forward, there is an urgent necessity to provide music and materials for othercountries to access. Efforts must be made to correctly and accurately educate thesecountries about Korea’s musical culture in hopes of introducing Korea’s vast variety ofmusic. It is believed that properly informing the value of Korea’s culture abroad will proveto be meaningful in building pride for our country’s cultural heritage.

본 연구에서는 일본의 중학교 음악 교과서에 우리나라 음악이 어떻게 수록되어 있는지에대해 검토를 해보았다. 이를 위해서 현재 일본에서 가장 많이 사용하고 있는 중학교 음악교과서 교육예술사(敎育藝術社, 교이쿠게이주츠샤)의 『중학생의 음악(中學生の音樂, 주가쿠세이노 온가쿠)』와 교육출판(敎育出版, 교이쿠슛판)의 『음악이 주는 선물(音樂のおくりもの, 온가쿠노 오쿠리모노)』이라는 2종의 교과서를 선택하였다. 일본 중학교 음악교과서 중 한국음악은 1학년 음악교과서에만 수록되어 있었다. 그리고그 내용은 한국의 ‘아리랑’과 ‘가야금’, 그리고 ‘설장구’에 대한 것이다. 전반적으로 한국 전통 음악이나 악기가 다양하게 수록되어 있지 않은 점에 대한 아쉬움이 있다. 문제점으로 한국음악의 특징을 살린 기보가 없고, 곡 해설 내용과 교과서에 수록된 사진에 오류가 있었다. 가장 문제가 되는 것은 국가명이 바르게 기재되어 있지 않았는데 ‘조선반도’라는 명칭은 ‘한국’이나 ‘대한민국’으로 수정되어야 하겠다. ‘아리랑’ 가사의 번안은 원래의 노래 의미를 일본어로 번안한 것과 원어의 발음 그리고 한글까지 3가지 형태가 함께 수록되었는데, 외국 곡의 번안으로 매우 잘 된 경우였다. 앞으로 외국에서 사용할 수 있는 악보나 자료가 구비되도록 하는 일이 시급하다. 문화의 중요성이 커지고 있는 지금, 외국의 교과서에 우리의 것이 소개되는 것은 어떤 홍보보다 큰 효과를 낼 것이다. 우리의 음악문화가 외국에서 올바르고 정확하게 알려지도록 노력하고 다양한 음악들이 소개되길 바란다. 이는 우리나라 문화의 가치를 외국에 제대로 알리는 것이며 또한 우리 문화에 대한 자긍심을 세우는 의미 있는 일이라 생각된다.
