The aim of this paper is to offer suggestions regarding the contents of teaching and learning materials, in order to ensure a comprehensive understanding of yeonhyangak. As a necessary preliminary, this paper analyses the yeonhyangak related contents of 17 different middle‐school music textbooks compliant with the education revisions instigated in 2009. Through analysing those textbooks, this paper examines the problems and limitations caused both by placing too much emphasis on listening and by providing inaccurate explanations and other mistakes. This paper then focuses on suggesting suitable contents for teaching and learning about yeonhyangak and for ensuring a comprehensive understanding of court music in the Joseon period in general. Discussion seeks to identify those historical sources that are most appropriate for helping teachers and students to understand yeonhyangak. This paper advocates the following contents: firstly, explanation about the forms and styles of court music performance in the Joseon period; secondly, discussion of basic concepts and orchestration of yeonhyangak; thirdly, summary jeongjae (court dance with song) of yeonhyangak repertoire; fourthly, explanation about and its accompanying music; fifthly, distinction between yeonhyangak and gochwiak (lit. drumming and blowing music); and finally, discussion about the differences between jeongjae orchestration as performed within and outside the court. This paper hopes that the explanations relating to yeonhyangak presented in this paper may be of practical use in schools, helping to guide students towards a more comprehensive understanding of yeonhyangak within court music culture.

본 논문은 연향악의 포괄적 이해를 유도할 수 있는 교수·학습 내용을 제시하는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 먼저 2009 개정 교육과정에 따른 중학교 음악교과서 중 연향악 관련 내용을 분석하고, 연향악이 감상 영역에 편중됨에 따른 문제점과 부정확한 설명 그리고 내용의 오류를 검토하였다. 분석과 검토를 통해서 드러나는 문제점과 한계를 진단하면서 연향악에 대한 포괄적 이해를 위한 요소를 제시하였다. 조선시대 궁중음악에 대한 전반적인 설명과 더불어 연향악을 이해하는 데에 긴요한 내용과 유용한 자료를 활용할 수 있도록 연향악의 포괄적 이해를 위한 교수·학습 내용으로서 연향악의 기본 개념, 연향악의 악기 편성 이해, 조선시대 궁중음악의 연주 형태, 연향악의 악곡 종류, 정재와 반주음악, 연향악과 고취악의 구별, 궁중과 민간의 정재 반주 악기편성의 차이 등의 내용을 다루었다.
