The purpose of the study was to investigate the process of transformative learning in the process of participation of adult cancer patients in the learning community from the viewpoint of informal learning and to present a conceptual model of adult cancer patients’ transformative learning. For this purpose, 15 adult cancer patients were selected as research participants, and interviews, observations, and focus group interviews were conducted. The results of this study are as follows: First, adult cancer patients’ change of viewpoint and structure of meaning through participation of learning communities are derived from four stages of ‘risk recognition stage’, ‘adjustment stage’, ‘transition stage’, and ‘internal growth stage’. Second, the core category is ‘internal growth through information sharing and peer support activities’. Third, the main processes of conceptual model of transformative learning through participation of learning community of adult cancer patients are supportive relationship formation, information sharing activity, shared knowledge schema formation, reflection and mindset transformation, and internal growth and transformation. Based on the results of this study, we discussed strategies to promote participation of adult cancer patients in learning communities.

본 연구는 성인 암환자의 학습공동체 참여를 통한 전환학습의 과정을 무형식학습의 관점에서 탐구하고, 이를 통해 성인 암환자들의 전환학습에 대한 개념적 모형을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 초ㆍ중기의 성인 암환자 15명을 연구참여자로 선정하여 심층면담, 관찰, 포커스그룹 인터뷰를 진행하고 연구자료를 근거이론의 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 성인 암환자들의 학습공동체 참여를 통한 의미 관점 및 의미 구조의 변화 양상은 ‘위기인식 단계’, ‘조정 단계’, ‘전환 단계’, ‘내적성장 단계’의 총 4단계로 도출되었다. 둘째, 핵심범주는 ‘정보공유 및 동료지지 활동을 통한 내적 성장’인 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 성인 암환자들의 학습공동체 참여를 통한 전환학습의 개념적 모형의 주요 과정은 지지적 관계 형성, 정보공유 활동(사례분석, 대안모색, 의사결정, 실천계획, 실천활동, 실천평가), 공유지식체계 형성, 성찰/의식 전환, 내적성장 및 전이로 도출되었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 성인 암환자들의 학습공동체 참여를 증진시킬 수 있는 방안을 논의하였다.
