The ‘subject’ of this thesis: Shaped Canvas, can be interpreted as an extension of acts of self-defiance in humanity, as it represents a process which distinguishes the picture plane’s integrity as an object, through its establishment of self autonomy and liberation from traditional formality of rectangular canvases. This thesis focused on ‘shaped canvas, or ‘shaped picture planes’, which diverged from traditional canvas and became an object by maximizing its physical property, examined the progression of shaped canvas work in art historic point of view, and established three mainpoints that define the concept of shaped canvas: objecthood, objet quality, and change of spacial concept. Consequently speaking, shaped canvas work reveals its identity by creating an alternative space within the exhibited space by subdividing the wall space into free-formed spaces, which signifies a change or expansion in the role of the wall space via installation. In other words, shaped canvas work, with its free-formed nature, leaves the negative space free-formed as well; transforming the wall space from a ‘background’ into an ‘expressive space’. Above being the primary focus of the thesis, it is the researcher’s intention to further explore the roles and utilization of the negative space in future installations of formally structured and unstructured art work.

본 논문의 ‘주제어’인 ‘변형 캔버스’는 전통적으로 쓰이던 사각의 캔버스를 벗어나 화면의 자율성 을 추구하면서 오브제로서의 특성을 드러내는 과정을 통해 인간이 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 행위의 하나로 이해 될 수 있다. 본고에서는 현대미술에 있어서 정형적인 캔버스의 형태를 벗어나 물성을 극대화하여 하나의 오브제(object)로 존재하게 된 ‘비정형화면(shaped picture planes)’ 즉, ‘변형 캔 버스’에 주목하고, 미술사적 측면에서 변형 캔버스의 출현과정을 살펴보았으며, 이의 핵심개념으로 ‘사물성’과 ‘오브제의 속성’, 그리고 ‘공간개념의 변화’라는 세 가지 특이사항으로 ‘변형 캔버스의 개념’을 이해하였다. 변형 캔버스 작업은 오브제로서의 특성과 더불어 벽면공간의 활용을 통해 벽면을 비정형적인 공 간으로 분할함으로써, 전시공간에서 새로운 공간을 생성해 내면서 작품의 정체성을 드러낸다고 할 수 있다. 이는 평면 회화의 설치에 있어서 벽면공간의 역할의 변환 혹은 확장을 의미한다. 즉 벽면공 간이 변형 캔버스의 비정형성으로 인하여 잔여 공간 역시 비정형적인 형태를 드러내게 되면서 전시 를 위한 벽면이 ‘단순배경’으로부터 ‘표현적 공간’으로 변환되는 것이다. 연구자는 이 부분에 주목하 였으며, 차후 정형 및 비정형의 작업을 전시함에 있어서 잔여공간의 역할과 활용에 관하여 연구 할 기회를 갖고자 한다.
