Most studies on crimes committed by senior citizens tend to have their focus on physical, psychological, and mental status of the elderly. These studies have a tendency to look for causes of crimes and solutions for them only within individual or family levels. Issues regarding senior citizens, especially ones looking at crimes, cannot easily be dealt with at individual or family levels, thus efforts should be made at national or communal levels. That is, issues concerning senior citizens might seem very personal ones, however, in their nature, they are social, which means any discussion to solve them should be held at the social level. This study will focus on finding causes of crimes committed by senior citizens within structural factors of society such as social isolation and poverty and will seek to find solutions from the aspects of social policies.

노인범죄의 원인에 대한 대부분의 연구는 개인의 신체적, 심리적, 정신적 측면에 맞춰져 있다. 그러나 이러한 기존 연구들은 범죄의 원인과 해결 방안을 개인이나 가족차원에 한정 시킨다는 문제점을 가지고 있다. 노인문제, 특히 노인범죄는 개인과 가족 차원에서 해결하기 어렵기 때문에 지역사회나 국가적 차 원에서 해결해야 할 수밖에 없다. 즉 노인범죄를 비롯한 노인문제는 노인 개개인의 문제처럼 보이지만 본질적으론 개인적 차원을 넘어선 사회적 차원의 문제로 그 대책 역시 사회적 차원에서 논의되어야 한 다는 것이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 노인범죄의 원인을 사회적 소외와 빈곤 같은 사회구조적 요인에서 찾고 그 해결책 역시 사회정책적 측면에서 모색해 보고자 한다.
