This study aims to find a narrative characteristics of Kim Hak-chul’s novel . It is envisioned as part of the ‘1950s/peasant/historical novel’ studies. This novel is a central conflict between the peasants of the landowner who conscripted the feudal interests and feudal exploitation of the Japanese army, but failed to portray the environmental degradation of the peoples' lives. Therefore, conflict and dispute were not expressed in the key point of conflicts. In addition, the author, who attempted to create a communist ideology, composed the story of a group of hero rather than portraying certain heroic characters as a mass-hero. Although the overall aspiration of the whole individual is a narrative method that can be seen in a more important historical novels, it has become a factor that can not be drawn into a impressive narrative. On the other hand, the author devoted himself to faithfully reproducing historical facts. Historical imagination, however, is crucial to the historical facts, which have failed to establish a vision of the present and future of the historical novel because of the lack of historical imagination. It seems to reflect the contributions of the Communist Party and the author's awareness of the role of the Koreans living in China. However, it remains to be seen that the lack of identity and self-examination of the entity to save the Narrativity of the history-itself has been revealed.

이 연구는 김학철의 장편소설 <해란강아 말하라>의 서술적 특성을 찾아보는 데에 목적을두고 있다. 이는 ‘1950년대 장편/농민/역사소설에 대한 연구’의 한 부분으로 기획되었다. 이 작품의 서술적 특성을 살피기 위해서 이 논문에서는 환경과 갈등의 문제, 집단적 주인공과 영웅 이야기의 관계, 역사적 사실에 치중하는 서술방식 등을 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 분석의 결과 다음과 같은 작품의 서사적 특성을 찾을 수 있었다. 첫째, 농민들의 삶의 현장인 환경의 악화를 충분히 그려내지 못해서 상황의 심각성을 드러내는 데 한계를 보였다. 그래서 갈등과 싸움이 당위성을 드러내기만 할뿐 왜 싸울 수밖에 없었는지, 그 갈등의 핵을 드러내지 못하였다. 둘째, 사회주의리얼리즘으로 창작하려 한 이 작품에서는 특정한 영웅적 인물을 주인공으로삼기보다는 집단적 주인공을 영웅시하려는 관점으로 이야기를 구성했다. 개인적 삶보다는 전체적 열망이 더 중요한 역사소설에서 볼 수 있는 서술방법이지만, 감동적인 서사로 끌어내지못하는 요인이 되었다. 셋째, 이 작품을 끌고 가는 힘은 실제 역사 사건에 대한 충실한 취재와 작가의 생생한 체험이다. 작가는 역사적 사실을 충실히 재현하는 데 치중했다. 상상력을 통한 재구성 과정이 미흡하여 역사소설이 추구해야 할 현재와 미래를 연계하는 전망을 확보하지 못했다. 이러한 특성은 이 작품이 지닌 공산주의운동에 대한 기여와 조선족의 자리매김을 추구하려는 작가의식이 반영된 것으로 보인다. 그러나 역사 자체가 가지고 있는 서사성을 살려내기위해 주체와 대상을 통합하는 자기정체성과 성찰력을 드러내지 못한 점이 이 작품의 아쉬운점으로 남았다.
