Using the data of Korean Innovation Survey 2002 on 3,775 manufacturing firms, this paper examines determinants of innovation activities in Korean information and communications technology (ICT) firms. Our estimation results show that both non-ICT and ICT firms have an inverted U-shape relationship between firm size and innovation activity. The innovation activity of ICT firms increases with more competitive industry structure and lower firm age, while the innovation activity of non-ICT firms doesn't show relationship with concentration ratio and firm age. Furthermore, product innovation and product improvement in ICT firms are more closely related to market structure and firm age than process innovation.

본 연구는 국내 정보통신(ICT)기업의 혁신활동을 결정짓는 요인들을 실증분석하고 타산업과 어떠한 차별적 성격을 갖는 지를 분석하였다. 국내 3,775개 제조기업을 대상으로 한 '2002년 기술혁신조사' 자료를 이용한 실증분석 결과에 따르면, ICT기업과 비ICT기업 모두 일정한 기업규모에 이를 때까지는 혁신활동이 증가하다가 그 이후는 서서히 감소하는 역U자형태의 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 비ICT기업의 혁신활동은 시장구조나 기업연령과 유의한 관계가 존재하지 않는 것으로 나타났지만, ICT기업은 시장구조가 경쟁적일수록 기업이 시장에 진입한 기간이 짧을수록 혁신활동을 수행할 확률이 더 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, ICT기업의 경우 공정혁신보다는 신제품혁신과 제품개선이 시장구조나 기업연령과 더욱 밀접한 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
